yep think those 3/4 and bigger the floor of the bed is at like 30/32 inches! 165 inches long/ around 70 inches wide so yes way too big for what we want them for! So while you are building wouldnt it be as easy to build 4 or 5    I keep looking at different plans I like the size of the 1/4 tons but also would like a tailgate. I have a flat bed that I built 10 years ago but its 5x8 good to haul wood etc but too big to drag around camping etc. Maybe 4x6 or smaller is what I want

Sorry just thinking out loud and rambling ...............

I'm thinking about bent tubing around the sides and front, then bent-tube tailgate that could hinge down. Probably not looking at a rear-ramp concept, but I might do some drawings to see what I can come up with.

How wide is the KJ? I'd like to make the axle and tire-footprint the same as the rear of the KJ. And I'd like to make the trailer as wide as the KJ too. I'd like to put matching wheels/tires on as well.

If I spend the money on tube-bender and welder, I'll definitely be up for making some to sell. Might even come up with multiple possibilities to choose from. I usually do when I design something.

Okay, so what tube-bender should I get? What welder should I get? I would probably design a front tube bumper too. No reason to only have tubing on my trailer. 8) I need some ideas that are inexpensive, but good enough to do the job.

Look out he is on a roll now! good outside width would be about 60 inches at most or under I would think.

Ever consider having a 'standard' 5x8 utility trailer modified? Or is this too big?

Image

This is my peanut butter hauler.

This ran me about $1200 new and weighs under a 1,000 lbs. It'd be fairly simple to do an SOA to gain some clearance. Or even a full axle swap. I'm debating this currently.

The trailer shop I got this from essentially custom builds each one anyway. Do you have any in your area?

Todd

Modifying a trailer is definitely a possibility, versus starting from scratch. Whatever I get, I'm sure I'll mod it. I couldn't stand those little tiny trailer donuts if I got one of the cheap ones I've been looking at. I like the tire size on yours phxtoad. But if I make a dedicated off-road cargo trailer, it'll be smaller. 5'X6' or something like that.

I just don't know now, but I wouldn't mind getting the welder and pipe-bender for other projects, so the trailer would be as good a reason as any for getting it. When I talked to my wife about getting a welder she goes, "Oh, that'd be awesome!"

Man...I love that woman. 8)

I built mine without any prior skill - just a buddy who could halfway weld, and his dad to stand around in the beginning and harumpf about the project a bit. :D

You should post some details pictures of your trailer.

Dog Party,

Have a look in the Expedition Portal forum. They have a whole section dedicated to trailer builds!

http://expeditionportal.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=42

Another great forum to lurk in!

Pixeldzn, I didn't read the entire post but what did you end up speding on this trailer build?

Probably in the neighborhood of $2000. That includes 2 new rims and tires, a new axle, fancy LED lights and hitch setup, and all the steel and aluminum diamond plate.

I like that trailer pixeldzn. I remember seeing the beginning of the build up, but I lost track of it. I'll have to read through that whole thread.

Thanks for the link to Expedition Portal. That's COOL!

Found the site it's called Tough Terrain Trailers http://www.off-roadinternational.com/trailers.html (music included)
They are pricey but gave my plenty of ideas. That articulation hitch $250!! I might pay someone to make me one. I'm sure Pixeldzn didn't pay that much for his.

I paid a preety penny for mine. I got mine at www.locknroll.com for $84 + $95, plus about $20 for the drop bar - so I spent over 200 after all was said and don.

Well, those Off Road International trailers start at $1900. It's moving in the right direction, but still not in the store with me. :-)

Thanks for the links! I'm getting all kinds of good ideas!! I'll pay $250 for a great hitch as long as it has a good warranty. If not, I'll build my own.

I have been trying to come up with a design I like and looking at every trailer site there is, Australia has some great ones and so does Africa, most South Africa companies.
www.tenttrax.com
www.kingkampers.com
www.haultent.com
www.expeditionswest.com
www.jumpingjacktrailers.com
www.kamparoo.com
www.cubcampers
www.kimberlykaravan.com
www.tracktrailers.com
www.campausa.com
These are some that I have checked out most are ones with tents etc but I was looking at designs/sizes/setups etc. I guess I want a "convertible" trailer one I can haul 2x4s from Lowes on Wednesday, haul camping stuff and sleep in it on Friday and Saturday and the next weekend have the Harley in it!
