Post subject:  Snow plow on a KJ

Has anyone done this before? I was thinking of installing one this winter, maybe make a little cash. I have seen a few kits on the internet. Plus a snow plow on a kj, you can't beat that . Anyways, pictures would be great.

Alot of people will say that the libby/all jeeps cannot handle a snowplow except a tj. The unibody is not really set up for alot of stress and will develope stress cracks after a few good hits. Kinda funny though b/c jeep says not to use a snow plow unless you have HD cooling, so I guess they believe it can handle it. The weight would be the main problem. You would need to at least get HD front coils to hold it up. A small plow may work just fine, but I wouldnt be doing alot of plowing with it.

Ahh, I see... Thanks for the reply, I'm not positive if I'm going to do it yet. I wouldn't be doing hardcore plowing, probably just my dad's buisness parking lot and a few of his other properties. If I do install one I will make sure to post pictures.

That's a lot of snow plowing to just make up for the cost of the thing. Over $1200. How much do people usually charge to plow parking lots and driveways?

Haha, yeah I haven't heard many good things about rocky road outfitters, but im sure it's just their lift thats $h*t. As for parking lots, I would probably get about 40 bucks per time, so the way it snows here it wouldn't take too long. Oh yeah, if you could find that car domain, that would be great!

Not sure how big your parking lot is, but most contractors in my area (Kansas City) charge about $100/ hr. for labor + cost of ice melt, sand, etc. Clearing of sidewalks would be extra on top of that. I have looked at the Snowbear (www.snowbear.com) plow from Rocky Road, as well as the Suburbanite plow by Westin. The Suburbanite is nicer and probably more durable (although it has a polyethylene blade), but it is a bit more pricey too at about $2500. You can find it at www.suburbaniteplows.com . I am also considering purchase of one of these to clear the clubhouse parking lot in my subdivision.

You can get the Snowbear snowplow at Home Depot (they also have the Snowbear trailers which I highly recommend as a great small utility trailer). I saw they wrere marked down in price at my HD but I do not remember how low.

Every couple winters my brother goes and buys a used pickup/plow combo, uses it for a season or two then sells it off again. Ends up makin a couple grand profit per winter. He set up a couple local places with contracts so if it snows he goes to plow and just bills them. Of course, this season he got hosed. Only plowed like once here due to the lack of snow. Just 2 quick storms so far.

Check out your local machine shops. I work in one that mainly makes parts for oil/gas drilling rigs but, we also make a lot of plow blades for people around here (including the Highway Dept and City trucks), for a lot less than it costs to buy them from the plow manufacturer and out of much stronger steel, usually.

I would not want to use the liberty to do a lot of plowing with. Had a plow on a 69 Bronco and it did OK, but was even hard on it and they were / are tougher than a Liberty. To push snow you really need a 3/4 or 1 ton rig. Now to do driveways etc you would be OK but no big parking lot jobs.IMHO

Tommudd I agree!!.... I have heard of plowing even being hard on 1/2 ton trucks. The liberty would be alright for plowing your drive way and the neighbours in light snow, but i wouldnt want to plow a parking lot or even a drive way with a foot of heavy wet snow. Better leave that to a 3/4 ton or 1 ton like tommudd said. :)
