Post subject:  ESP issue?

OK, I have a '06 Renny with a 6spd. I have noticed I get a severe hesitation at around 1800 rpms (+/- 100) when shifting into 2nd or 3rd, like the engine is bogging down or got flooded. After a second it revs fine and off we go. Sometimes I see the ESP light on, most of the time I don't. I'm going to let the dealer look at it when I can sapre it for a few days, but I began to wonder if this is just normal ESP trying to "help" me. Maybe the torque is too much, I just don't know. I'm now running with ESP off to see if that fixes the "problem". Any thoughts?

Moose,

Did you ever get an answer to this? I'm running a Daystar 2.5" lift with 31" MTRs and have the same problem. Depressing the ESP OFF button EVERYTIME I get start my Liberty seems to be the closest thing to a fix I can find, and it's FAR from perfect. Oh, and mine is a 6-spd.

Is it doing this while the clutch is still partly depressed? Perhaps there is a switch of some sort the detects whether or not the clutch is depressed? Im just thinking out loud I guess but perhaps that would be something to look into. See whether clutch position/engagement has anything to do with this ESP vs 6 Spd ordeal.

Well, my dealer has been trying to get someone at DCX to come look at the problem, but no luck yet. When I was at camp jeep, the engineers who worked on the ESP told me if I really wanted to get rid of it before a fix is released (if ever), then get a little logic circuit that will strobe the ESP OFF line about a second after ignition. They said the just cutting the wire would have the ESP think that the switch was bad, and then it would just turn itself back on for me. Other than that - live with it, and don't pull out in front of anything bigger than you

This is my first post but I've been following this thread for some time.

I too have been suffering from daily engine stumble and stutter, caused by ESP.

Originally it would occur while shifting from second to third from about 1500 RPM, mostly during left hand turns and usually when pulling into traffic at major intersections.

After hitting a pothole large enough to cause the engine to stutter and die, the problem subsided for a while. Unfortunately it has come back with a vengance, only now the vehicle stumbles on every right turn. Interestingly enough, I've noticed it rarely stumbles when the roads are wet.

I've returned the vehicle to the dealer 10 times since new. On the seventh visit they kept the vehicle for five days but claimed they were unable to duplicate the problem. After lodging several complaints to Chrysler, the dealer has now twice installed a Mopar Co-Pilot device to record data for their engineers to analyze.

This is a problem that I can't live with and I am considering legal action if the problem is not resolved soon.

Has anyone considered the clockspring being bad, or whatever it is that detetects steering angle. The mention of problems while turning makes me suspect this.

I don't know. I just want it fixed. I was about to trade for a Wrangler (and take a hellofa bath on the KJ) when I bought a frankenlift. If I get dead or injured due to this problem, I hope my wife sues them for a boat load of money so she can get a CJ with no dang computers.

I don't really have any complaints on mine. The foreign auto makers sure pump up the esp availability on their commercials. I have felt it a couple of times, like you said, a quick bog down, but nothing that has affected my safety. I almost always drive very conservatively for safety and for gas mileage. Maybe try a slower, smoother acceleration(obviously this is not always possible i.e. flooring it to get on the freeway, etc.)
Good luck on a fix, no one wants to compromise their safety.
