I'm driving home from work and I start hearing this small light metal clicking noise that seems to be coming from the very top of my dash near th windshield...it is very inconsistent, doesn't happen under breaking all the time, sometimes happen while accelerating and then while at a constant speed it will be heard. Is heard over most bumps but not all bumps. WELL, I finally get home and pop the hood to see what might be in there that is causing it, and I believe I found it. right above the steering column breaking through the firewall there is a series of cables attached above in a plastic holding/guiding container to other parts of the KJs engine bay. The screws that hold that plastic piece into place seem to be very loose and cauising some metal bracket that is around one of them to rattle against the metal of the engine bay near the top of the engine bay/bottom of the windshield...I pulled away the seal and that black plastic cover b/w the hood and the windshield (where the wipers rest) and there is no access to the screws from there. i also checked under the steering column inside the KJ and defintiely no access there. Anyone have a clue how i could try and tighten these screws before they rattle out of place and cause all of these wires to go everywhere in my engine bay? I hope this is a clear enough description of my situation... |

Not sure exactly where your referring to but maybe you can take your cowl cover off? (The black plastic in front of the windshield) |

Ok that metal pice you see there is the bracket or whatever surrounding the screw or bolt (not too sure what it is exactly but it is loose)...
This is another pic just taken further back of the area in question, ou can see where the line of cables wrapped in tape go through this plastic guide/holder thing and then there is the metal screw and bracket there on the right and then to the left side (just above and to the left of the power steering fluid cap) you can see another screw sticking out without that same metal bracket over it...
My theory is that that metal bracket is the rattling i'm hearing inside the cab, since that whole plastic thing is pretty loose and needs to be tightened up. the only problem is I can't seem to figure out how to tighten these up... |

Are those studs loose? It looks to me like those are studs welded into the firewall from the backside and the wire harness bracket is fastened with a pushnut type clip. ??? Have you tried just pushing the harness against the firewall or is the screw or stud loose too? Otherwise that looks like it's so high up on the firewall that you'd need to get way up under the dash to get to the backside. I wonder if you could even get up there without taking the dash apart. |
