Is there a way to tell if I have the LSD that requires friction modifier to be put in when doing a differential oil change? Something by the VIN number perhaps?? I have no idea if I have this part or not. :?

Also, will it hurt to put friction modifier in the diff even if I dont have the LSD in question? And does all this stuff apply to the front differential as well??

Look for a label wrapped around the rear axle tube that says Trac-Lock on it. It is usually on the passenger side tube near the brakes. Using it in a non-posi won't hurt anything though and it isn't neccessary in the front diff.

If your stickers have worn off, you can contact Jeep and get a build sheet. Do a search for the directions.

So I went to Autozone today and bought some 75W90 full synthetic by Mobil 1.

I saw that label JJsKJ was talking about and I do indeed have the Trac Loc diff.

So I realized after I left the store that I needed friction modifier. So I go to Gotelli's Speed Shop over here in SSF and ask for friction modifier. I tell the owner (who is a very helpful and nice guy) that I just bought some Mobil 1 full synthetic 75/90 for my diff. He asks to look at the bottle and tells me that I dont really need friction modifier since the Mobil1 stuff exceeds GL5 specs. It also says on the bottle ......blah blah blah, here's the website:

http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Other_Products/Mobil_1_Fully_Synthetic_Gear_Lube_75W-90LS.aspx

But since Gotelli's carries Amsoil products, I bought a bottle of Amsoil slip lock differential additive for 8 bucks.

I was thinking of returning the Mobil1 when I saw that they had Royal Purple gear oil for 10 bucks a quart. It too has friction modifier already in it.

I bought RTV from Gotelli's too, since they only wanted 4.95 for it instead of 6.79 from Autozone and 6.99 from OSH.

Now I just need to buy my putty knife and pump and I'm all set... :)

I run Royal Purple and find that it's better than the stock synthetic with the friction modifier. I've had mixing troubles that I don't have with the aftermarket stuff. And yes, I do my figure 8's after the change to lube the clutches.
