Yesterday i brought the Lib in for an Oil change and to have my brakes looked at as they were vibrating and wanted to see if it was my pads, or rotors or what.

So, i ended up needing the front rotors resurfaced, new rear rotors and new pads all around. Midas Wanted 895 + Tax for this! I told Midas not to touch it and just have the oil changed (per my free coupon :) )

Called up a couple buddies, got all new rotors (drilled + slotted) and all new Ceramic Pads for 240 after taxes from Advanced Automotive (closest place to me)

Made a later afternoon of it and banged it all out in under 2 hours!

Long story short, if it wasnt for the Changing breaks overview i probably would've paid nearly 900 for breaks.

 Good one.

My mom was telling me about this womans Ex-husband at work yesterday. His rear calipers locked up on his libby, like many on here have, and he needed new calipers, rotors, and pads. They charged him $400 for it and he sold the jeep. I didnt know what to say.

Most of the chain store brake and muffler places are rip off specialists. They put out the cupons to get you in their store so they can do inspections of other components in the hope of making an over priced sale.

Exactly they replace what you do not need replaced. And once they replaced the stuff, they give you crap parts so you would go back to them. My dad had his car's exhaulst done including cat and O2 sensor at midas and it went bad in 2 years and the car had stock exhaulst for 8. Although they warrenty the stuff they wont fix the O2 sensor and part of the piping, so they made us go to the dealer so they comp us. Bad news the dealer ripped us off by charging 900 dollars for the job and midas gave us back 200. My dad and I told them you said u were going to pay the full money back and the guy said he cant. The worst part is we actually know the owner of the place. Now that he comes to my family's restuarant .....

It saves to know how to work on a vehicle.

Many of those chain places REQUIRE that an employee bring in x dollars of work. For example, three oil changes should result in $200 in upcharges or the employee may even get canned.

The hard part of dealing with brake repair places is that they put the fear of part failure into the customers. Basically they tell you that if you don't repair your brakes that they will fail at 70 MPH on the freeway during rush hour with your kids in the back seat and that you will all die in a fiery crash. I know that that is a little dramatic but no other maintenance can instill such fear, miss an oil change interval shorten your engine life, don't change your air filter lower your fuel mileage. Now I do believe that brakes are important and need to be maintained and failure of said brakes can be very hazardous. That said my wife went to the dealer for some work and was told that she needed new brake pads, all new rotors and all new calipers. I took apart the brakes and the pads were all wearing pretty even and had about 10,000 miles left on them, the calipers were not hung up, the pistons looked fine and the seals were fine on them, the only issue was 1 warped rotor which was very easy to see once I had the wheels off.

I have changed the brakes on every vehicle I have ever owned.. When I was young and broke back in the day, you learn things fast to save money.. That bad thing is.. Don't let your friend know you know how to change brakes.. They will come to you to change them.. LOL I spent a whole saturday changing the front pads on 3 cars for friends.. But I made $150 for doing it.. $50 a car.. Luckily it was just the front pads.. I HATE drum brakes.. LOL

Post subject:  Having owned a Midas Franchise....

Back in 1981, My parents purchased a Midas Franchise in upsate NY. Thier philosophy was simple....don't beat the customer. It was small town and repeat business was imperative. Back in the day, Midas had an individual muffler to fit every vehicle. No modifications were necessary to get he parts to fit. They were double wrapped galvinized shells that weighed a fair bit. The pipes were all bent from 12ga aluminized tubing. Well, about in the early 90's, the District manager came to the family business and told us we were not selling enough and we had to make more sales. We told him to go screw,,this is our business and no one tells us to make sales that are not needed. Oh yeah, the other thing was Midas switched to single wrapped, universal style mufflers. Great! Inventory reduction! Oh wait a minute, the mufflers were now complete garbage, and the pipes were made from 16 or 18 ga crap! They were rotting out in less than a year with the salt on the roads. After about six years of putting up with the BS from Midas, and seeing the unhappy customers as they were now coming in efvery year to have the same things fixed, we sold the business in 1997. April 1, 1997...the day of the blizzard. The guy who bought the business was real POS who proceeded to screw everyone every day. In a small town, that just does not work for very long. In 2002, he torched the building.

Oh yeah, don't even get me started on how Midas shanged the quality of their shock and brake components.....that would make my blood pressure rise to a point Old Faithful would erupt out of the top of my skull!

Huh, tell me about it! I was paid $50 to change the front rotors, pads and change the oil on a dakota(boy that 4.7 was fun!) but I had to buy the oil+filter(this was the guys dad, below is his son). I made $35 that day, but it was family so I couldnt say anything. Made $10 the other day for changing the spark plugs and belt on my cousins cherokee, but hes poor and that was all he had. Im not going to turn down family that cannot afford to take it somewhere else and needs it done. I told him to come back whenever he needed something done.

I am so sick of hearing that. It's practically the only time I hear from my family! :?
