hello, i am a new member. just bought an 06 sport with the 3.7 gas and the six speed manual. glad to be here! love my new ride! i also have an 99xj. i have tried the search function with no luck. my new 3.7 with 4000 miles makes noise when started cold that sounds like piston slap? goes away within 3 minutes. have their been any threads about this issue someone can point me to? i don't think i am using the right key words in the search? thanks again for any answers or past threads! mike |

do you hear it only right after you start it up, or after you start to drive away (which is usually right after you start it)? |

I have some clatter right after start up. Didnt get it when it was new though. I guess its just the valves? |

it will do it when it is idling and when it is driving away. it sounds like a little diesel. if anyone has ever heard piston slap in a 4.0 xj it sounds identical to that. i was thinking it also could possible be the timing chains if they got hydrualic tensioners? i also have been reading about piston slap in the new hemis from dodge and wondered if that is what i am hearing? i thought maybe the pistons and the skirts might be similiar due to the same engineers? thanks mike p.s. mine also did not due it when it was new. it just started to show up at 4000 miles |

I'm thinking you may be hearing the ABS solenoids cycling thru self-tests....they do it at start-up and again when you hit 18mph I think...just ONE possible explanation...maybe not the right one!!!! JP |

I think it's a bad lifter but i'm not sure I need to have the dealer look at it. |

Not to sure how that works though. |

I have had the "rattle" since last Dec ( around 4000 miles) in my 06 Renny. It only does it when its cold. It was getting worse as time went on also it had a slight hesitation in overdrive. I now have just under 24,000 miles in it. Well i had the dealer check it out. It seems the my TC has gone south. They said that it was showing CODE, the same as the CRD Libertys. I just got back from the Dealer. No more "rattle" and NO more hesitation under Accel in over drive. I am glad i got it fixed before the warranty ran out. BTW it seems the DC will not warranty Dealer installed options. I called the DC CustomerCare Number and was told by their Rep. "If its not on the VIP sheet ( thats the factory build sheet the dealership can pull up with your VIN #) its not covered under factory warranty" So much for MOPAR dealership installed options P.S. Its Kahlo in Noblesville. Really great place. I just wish that DC wouldnt tie their hands on warranty work |

yes it has lifters... however I don't know if they are hydraulic. The rocker arms just may need to be tweeked |
