Post subject:  Blown upper radiator hose UPDATE: W/P bad!

My '05 left me stranded yesterday. The upper radiator house split from one clamp to the other. Total blow out. The engine was not running hot at all so I do not believe that a stuck thermostat or similar problem caused it. We will see what the stealership says....

I know that you can get a bad example of anything, but a hose suffering a catastrophic failure at 22,000 miles and 18 months really has me concerned.

Oh well. Just blowing off steam. Much like the KJ did sitting along the side of I-70.....

Hmm, that sucks. I guess it was just a bad hose. You need to check those things ever so often. You can get lifetime hoses from All J's.

The only time I have heard of this is

1 blown head gasket.

2 really old hose both in years and mileage.

I have never seen a defective hose in all my years (if it was in dog years I would be dust!). I guess that could happen. If it is, its just another thing we will need to check. By the way I am haveing a sale on BRX hoses, guarantee not to do that. $85 plus shipping. I have red left in stock. But before you go ahead an do that, buy a cheapie hose....

Put a new hose on it an run it for a while with out the cap, see if you get bubbles in the holding tank. I have heard of a couple of the 3.7 loosing a head gasket.

UPDATE:

The hose was a warranty job. And...drum roll please...the stealership says that the water pump is shot. SO... they will put a water pump on it and then see if the head gasket is gone......

What throws me is that the gauge ws definitely running at normal temp when the hose went. It was the first thing I looked at. And, you may find this strange (or not) but I look at my gauges a lot. I was cruising at about 75 mph on the interstate, but it was about 95 deg. out. I don't think the Libby should have been concerned with the 70+% humidity and 108 deg heat index, just the ambient air temp.

Oh the joys of Jeep ownership! lol

Well it's great that it's done under warrenty, but bad that your water pump blew already. Did you get any whining sounds before your hose blew? My friends '04 just blew a water pump, and before that happened, he was hearing a sound similar to a turbo sucking air.

Wow, i hope the water pumps dont go on these like they did on our grand cherokee.

My water pump just went. 60k '02. Pretty easy swap. Also put on some BRX hoses I picked up from JeepinAl while I was at it. Lifetime guarantee and I know where he lives!

One incident. Everyone don't start to panic. In a large volume parts world, there will be a failure here and there. If it starts happening quite often, then it becomes an issue to worry about.

Those hoses Al sells are really cool and are worth their cost, but for me, out of my price range.....for now. I'll wait until I know it is time to replace hoses......or mine go bad sooner than expected.

My KJ has 55k and is 3.5 years old, so I just changed, flushed actually, the antifreeze. To do this, you have to pull off both hoses and remove the thermostat, so I just replaced all of them. I figure I'm good for another 3 years. At $10 each, it's a cheap piece of insurance. I didn't know about lifetime hoses.

I honestly did not hear a thing. But, I was cruising on the interstae with a Who cd blasting, so it could have.....

Oh! It made noise. Probably sent smoke signals and set off flares too, but you thought it was all part of the show!

seriously, it's hard to hear those kinds of noises with the windows up, the AC on at highway speeds, AND the stereo going. Very hard!

Dealership called, and the jeep is ready. They said the water pump took care of the problem. I am skeptical. I do not see where the pump would have caused the hose to explode, and I am reluctant to believe the two events were a coincidence. I wish I had a digi cam with me to show the extent of the hose failure. Catastrophic is the right word. It literally split, both inner and outer portion, from one attachment point to tthe other.

Is it possible the pump was putting out too much psi and therefore overloaded the hose?

I was thinking about that, but I dont understand what would fail on the pump to do that. I would need to look at the path of flow before I could understand that. If he was going down the hw then Im sure his stat was open. Idk how it could build up pressure if it was open? Then again, I dont know how everything flows in there. :?:

I am not nearly smart enough to know that, but it just does not make sense to me that the pump was causing too much pressure before failing. I am certain that it was not running hot at all. The gauge was at its normal place. You would think that too much pressure or too little ( from a non-functioning pump) would have caused a temp. jump. I was really worried about a head gasket (still am) as compression getting into the water jacket could cause such a pressure build up.

It really may be the curse of I-70. That road is littered with broken down heaps regularly.LOL. And for those of you who rememebr WKRP in Cincinatti, I was in the Dayton Triangle when it happened..... (cue twilight zone theme)

Have you checked your oil? If it runs ok now your head gasket is fine. Its not going to blow a radiator hose then just be ok. Head gaskets dont just fix themselves.

Just make sure your oil isnt milky looking or anything like that.

Well, I put about 200 miles and 2 hours of idle time on it. It ran just like it did before the incident. Oil is good, no air bubbles in coolant, temp is right were it is supposed to be. Seems to be back to normal...... Thanks for the assist with the info posts....
