Post subject:  Rock Rails w/ Side Protection

Does anybody know of any rock rails for the Liberty that stick out past the edge of the doors so if I slide into a tree I don't take the door out? I've seen a lot of Wranglers with them where they actually have two rock rails combined into one. One protects the bottom of the edge and the other protects the side. Haven't seen anything like this for the Liberty. Here they are for the Wrangler:

You could make this part by welding a tubular piece onto All J's boulder bars:

Look at the "Skink Super Slider Features" section at the bottom of the rock rail section.

Contact Carolina Rock Shop. There is a huge thread in the Carolina LOST section when we had a group buy for them a few months ago.

Id get the super skink sliders. They look really good! Work as a step also.

Don't tell anyone, but the rails I am in the middle of building for myself rely heavily on SLink Slider inspiration.

I think those are the only two worthy of buying, with the additional protection. (Rock Lizard and Carolina Rock Shop)

You could see if you can buy the add-on protection bars and have someone local weld them onto another model of side rails if you so desire. Just make sure those rails are big enough for the tube add-ons though.

This is probably fairly subjective, but what are the pros and cons of Rock Lizard and CRS rock rails? Do the CRS rails bolt to the pinch welds as well like the Rock Lizard rails? The CRS have more mounting holes and an additional support, but it looks like some of the mounting holes aren't used.

You should talk with both businesses and gather information from them. Have you looked closely at the pictures of both, mounted?

Yeah, they both seem to have different mounting strategies. CRS uses three major supports and no pinch weld bolts. Rock Lizard uses two major supports and many pinch weld bolts. It's too bad there isn't one like the All J Boulderbars that has three major supports and many pinch weld bolts.

Clint's ridiculously cool ZJ has All J's Boulderbars with an added side protection/step that runs the length of the bars. I'd say call all 3 places.

I wouldn't recommend purchasing anything from Carolina Rock Shop. They have had $1300 of my money for over three months. Phone calls do not get returned and I don't have any parts in my possession. They have the worst customer service that I have ever experienced. Buyer beware.

I asked this EXACT question many months ago and no one replied about the CRS rails. The thread became DEAD SILENT. I can tell you from the pictures I've seen that they only bolt to the frame rails, and one good hit and they will get torn out. I went with Boulder Bars because they were 17 bolts per side (10 in 3 seperate frame rail attachments, and 7 in the pinch weld).

Then Skink Sliders came out. They use two LARGE frame rail supports and many pinch weld bolts - they will not go anywhere either. If you want that extra protection with that extra outer rail, go that route.

I didn't because I was not sure if I'd get stuck on a rock on the short pieces that attach the outer rail to the inner rail. But I seem to be around more trees than not, so that may be a mistake, but, I'm not sure if the outer rail comes out enough to fully protect the full width(horizontal bulge) of the door. Maybe someone can answer that.

I can say for sure that my first time out with the BBs, I hit the front lower passenger corner BB and mashed it in a little, and the BB did not budge. The pinch weld bolts held on and resisted the shearing force, otherwise it would have ripped out of the frame.

Maybe someone can prove me wrong, but I do not see ANY pinch weld mounting holes/provision in these CRS rock rails(pics from another thread on this site): (Love the dog, he's in charge :) )

Be forewarned. The further out your rails stick, the more leverage they have. I had RRO Step rails as my 1st set. They were just about out enough to protect the doors from a verticle obstacle. But I broke them, well bent and broke. They were thinner and only used two mounting points. I switched to All J's. Much beefier but no door protection. Give and take.

There are pics of my broken and bent rails on my web site.

It must be taboo to talk about the CRS rock rails on this site. This is the second time I've made a post about them since the beginning of 2006, and again, silence on the issue...

I guess this just verifies that they do not mount to the pinch weld...

Thanks for pointing out those pics. This is why I like the triangular mounting system and elongated mounting points on the Rock Lizard Super Skink Slider. It looks like it would resist being pushed backwards really well. Just waiting for some pics of the Super Skinks on a KJ and then I'll probably buy a pair from Rock Lizard.

I should elaborate on how mine broke. One side broke I THINK from taking a shot just behind the front wheel, pushing the bar towards the back wheel. It snapped every one of the pinch weld bolts and bent the thing out of 90* angles.

However, the other side was bent upward. I don't knwo when it happened, but what I can tell you is that after jacking with both sets of bars, the RRO bars, that stuck out more, had more flex as I jacked. While the All J's don't move an inch as I jack with a hi-lift. That's the leverage that I was talking about. And hwen you come down on a rock on just the outside edge of your bars, it's the same type of leverage.

There are pictures of Super Skinks on the forum. They are also on his business website. Two or three of us have posted pictures with our skinks on. I had mine on when we did LOST MOab back in April. Rock Lizard has dropped the High Density Poly strips from the design. They work great but still can be torn by rocks. Mine are warped since I put mine on during colder weather and the hot weather expanded the Poly strips.

AdamIsAdam, I see what you mean about leverage on the outer rail if you came down on a rock, but for jacking I'd use the main bar that all rock rails have.

Tokyojoe, I'm looking for pictures of the Super Skink Sliders, of which there don't seem to be any yet. When you say they can still be torn by rocks do you mean the HDPE or the rails in general?

Good to know Mutt, thanks.
