Post subject:  Belt Driven Onboard Air

Does anybody know if there is a kit for the 3.7L to run an air compressor off of the serpentine belt? As usual there are a ton of these kits for the 4.0s in TJs but I don't see any for our 3.7L. The brackets for the 4.0 are a simple welded plate steel design which I'm sure someone with fabrication skills could make.

Some of the kits relocate the alternator:

Others relocate the A/C:

A belt driven air compressor would be amazing. I would give up a/c in a second for it.

I would like to see a KJ kit somewhere down the road.

JFortier777, you can give up A/C for it now! Just convert your A/C compressor into an air compressor. All you have to do is put a filter and oiler onto the low side and put a tank and drier on the high side. But I'm not giving up my A/C for air :( I like the kits they make for the TJ where the alternator and York compressor share a mount point on the engine, that way you get to keep your A/C

I would rather swap out the stock compressor. I am still only about 60% sure I want to buy my liberty when im done leasing.

Lol I have a big box now of all my stock parts that I have wrapped in shrink wrap to preserve until turn in time.

Heh, stock parts, those reincarnated themselves as new parts on my Jeep

I contacted Brad of Kilby Enterprises and he said that he may build a compressor bracket for the PowerTech engine in the future. If you're interested you might want to send him an email.

The stock A/C compressor is a centrifugal type compressor and would be pretty much useless as an air compressor.

As for installing a York, I'm actually trying to work that out right now... Stay tuned.

FreedomKJ, let us know how it goes :D Good tip on the centrifugal compressor, didn't realize they were so inefficient and operated at such low pressures, thanks.

Will do. The first (and most difficult step) is figuring out how the heck I'm gonna mount this thing!

That's the only difficult step, after that you're just normal air, it's all about the bracket

Is it possible to make a removable air compressor? For example, I don't want one on my KJ all the time, just when going wheeling....so is it possible to make one that I can slap on just before hitting the trails?

I don't know ANYTHING about how these things work so forgive me if I sound a little dumb.

Most people use small 12 volt compressors that plug into your cigarete lighter or clip onto your battery terminals. These are of course removable.

Some people carry CO2 tanks with them when offroading. When compressed CO2 reverts to liquid form and is very dense. The standard 10lb. bottle will fill something like 40 tires before it needs refilling.

What I'm trying to do is install a belt-driven York a/c compressor to use as an air compressor. They put out a lot of air very quickly. This saves a great deal of time airing up tires and when combined with a tank allows you to run air tools.

CO2? Explain how that works...by my guess when you compress air it turns liquid? And then when you use it, in tires ...paintball guns etc...it turns back into air form?? Info please and also where I can get the tire attachment and all that stuff.

You can get really good air compressors that run off of 12v. Many people mount them under their seats and things. I wish I could find one local, but I cannot.

Yeah, supposedly Viair makes great compressors. There's also what seems to be a rebranded Viair available at many auto stores for ~$60 that has awesome output: http://parksoffroad.com/prodreview/infl ... 0/mv50.htm I'm just looking for a belt driven compressor because I've already got enough toys running off of the battery and you can never beat engine power  BTW, if anyone's interested, there's an awesome compressor review done here: http://parksoffroad.com/prodreview/infl ... ormain.htm
