Post subject:  ESP Question

Today I was on a pretty steep incline and pulling out into traffic. I had to get on the gas petal much harder than normal to make sure I didn't force someone to slow down. So I got 3/4 threw then turn and the eginge stalled a couple of times then went on as normal. I was wondering what had happend, then looked down at my dash and saw the ESP light blink 4 -5 times and go out.

Did I trigger the ESP? Is this normal?

Nope, thats not ESP, thats traction control. Yes, thats normal...

I've been having a lot of problems with the esp/traction control module, and at Camp Jeep yesterday I got to talk to some Engineers who work on it. They were surprised, but said they'd look into the issue.

Sux, doesn't it :( They should turn it off in 2wd mode....

With the way the CRD comes on at full throttle from a stop I am glad it is there. Especially for when someone unfamiliar with the vehicle has to drive it. Since moose wants to drive his like a hot rod  perhaps he will find a way to turn it off for those that want too. For the CRD and all those with full time 4wd you can put it in that mode for a super quick take-off then kick it back in 2wd after you get going.

ESP (of which TC is a component) will limit wheel spin if detected. Chances are if it intervened in your situation, you would have just spun the tires even more without it or if it was deactivated.
In theory, you should ultimately move along quicker and in a more controlled fashion with the electronic nanny, than if you just try and modulate the throttle to control wheel spin the old fashioned way.
Have faith in it, it doesn't seem too intrusive so far in my opinion.

It seemed to work as it should. I just was not expecting it. Now I am. I really cannot wait to see what it does in the snow and ice. Might be fun.

I don't know about snow/ice, but I was impressed with how it worked in sand and mud. With it partially disabled in 4H and 4L, it seems to hesitate for a moment when traction is lost, but then starts sending power where needed.
I'm still skeptical that it works as well as a true limited slip and almost certainly not as well as a locker, but it probably is as good as the previous Trac-Loc option.

How about the acutal ESP. Anyone ever feel that activate and attempt to correct over/understeer? I have had some wild times in my other rear wheel drive cars in the winter. I expect the All time 4 Wheel drive and ESP to help matters.

ESP would probably not let you go sideways anymore. Thats the only thing about that. Sometimes I want to go sideways, and sometimes I dont. i had alot of fun last night when it rained for the first time in weeks. The road always seems to be so slick when its not rained in along time. Nothing like all those crappy jeeps out there leaking oil!!

The first time it did it to me I was trying to make a left turn at a light, big truck came up fast so I floored it. It was wet out and i knew it would go sideways on me. It slipped I corrected a bit and about the same side the ESP kicked in too. So i just kind of did a little weave instead of the power slide i expected.

With my 6spd, both my wife and I engage the TC (me daily, her weekly, but I drive it more). I like the way it works off road, don't get me wrong. The TC based "Limited Slip" works great, but on road, I hate it. Now that I turn it off at startup (usually, and I bites me when I don't!) I don't have problems, nor do I have tire spin. It's to a point that if I didn't have 57 more payments, I'd be looking at a Wrangler.

Bovie,

Drove my CRD all last winter and it was amazing. Went places I never would have dreamed before and a couple of trips over the Cascades that would have been white knuckles in anything else. All this with the stock tires. I really took notice of the ESP though one morning on the way to work in about 10" of wet snow when a Honda Accord was comming toward me and got a little out of sorts. I barely touched the brake and all of a sudden I heard and felt the ABS kick in on the left front wheel only that aparently was in a skid mode all by itself. The Liberty just went along without a wiggle though.

Your that upset about the traction control? And if you turn it off before you go, all it fine? I turn O/D off everytime I start up. Cant stand it going into 4th and locking the torque at 40 mph!!!

I've got on my CRD a few times and that is the only time that the TC has activated. I don't see it as a problem but, I guess if your always getting on it hard, it might be.

I think my engine goes over 2.5 rpms maybe once or twice a week... :) Only if Im trying to get sideways or beat someone at a redlight.

I have had the exact same issue with my '06 6 speed and it is a little more than annoying. When I pull off of the hill leaving my neighborhood, it's blind stretch of road coming from the left so you try to get on across before someone comes around the bend and slams into you. There's nothing more irritating than having pulled out in first and shifting to second just in time for the engine to start screwing off, leaving you sitting in the middle of the oncoming lane with a big truck locking the brakes and sliding toward you. Instead of just making it safely across the lane, you end up half stalling and bucking and lurching trying to get out of the way. I am going to investigate if there is someway StarScan can disable this ill-designed nightmare before it gets me killed.

Save the money, you can turn it off by hitting the little button on the top of the stering wheel. Or your friend could reverse the wiring for that switch so it is off when you start, and you have to push it to turn it back on.

I have turned it off, and that seems to help but it only disables part of the system and it's a pain in the stupid to have to hit it all the time. I am looking for something more permanent without changing the wiring because it is a leased vehicle.

The engineers at Camp Jeep told me that if I change the wires, the system will think the button is broke and automagically re-engage the ESP (I love these guys, their almost as bad as Bill Gates and his stupid software!); HOWEVER, if I create something that will strobe the line right after power up, that would work (it's looking for a strobe on the line, not a connection or lack there of).

Elwenil, I feel your pain, just as I've almost felt oncoming trafic myself...
