i have an 03 kj and I just bought a warn 8000 winch. Which optima yellow top do i need?

I have the same winch and the manual says 650 CCA minimum, so I'd think you'd want at least the Optima Yellow Top D75/25 or D35. I haven't yet replaced my stock battery (it hasn't died yet) so I can't really give you any input on the physical sizing. You need to find the max BCI group that the KJ can accomodate, then find an Optima within that group.

Yellow top 34/78 is the one that works. It'll take a mode ot the battery tray but that's the one.

I think I'm going to have to go with something more serious than an Optima. I already have an RC of 120 and CCA of 600 with my Renegade battery. A new Optima would just give me more CCA, which is only for a momentary high current draw like starting the engine or winch. Although, I'm sure the Optima design is 5x better than the OEM battery design.

the reason that every body wants the optima yellow is for the "deep cycle" thing but in reality how often do you use your winch?
if your batt. meets the 650cca requirements then it wont be a problem unless you are running all kinds of other stuff that is drawing current as well
the only advantage is that after so many "pulls" with your winch a regular batt will stop charging up good but the optima will
on the other hand a deep cycle batt does not last as long as a starting batt for day to day use just look at the warrantys on the batts at walmart
a starting batt useualy will give like 3 years free replacement but a deep cycle is like a year

I would just go to walmart buy the biggest best battery they sell with like a 5 year free replace ment follow the "warranty instructions" and go with it they have no way of knowing what you were doing with that battery and will give you one for free
plus as a bouns if you are 1000 miles from home but only 2 miles from a walmart then BAM free batt if the one you got dies

No, don't get me wrong, I like Optimas. I just don't think their largest one is going to have enough RC to power my winch, audio system, and air compressor. Maybe I'll put an Optima Red Top in the front and a gell cell in the back or something. Anyways, sorry for high jacking the thread.

Both RedTops and YellowTops are Absorbed Glass Matt (AGM). Gell Cells require a special charger in your car, so Optima can't make a cheap drop in gell cell. More info: http://www.uuhome.de/william.darden/carfaq7.htm

optima's rock. I would never own anything else. I'm pretty happy the CRD comes with a redtop.
