Took the KJ for a wash today and when I got home noticed that the plastic "rivets" holding the fender flare inside the wheel well (driver side rear) is loose and basically hanging there? Any ideas how to fix this? Super glue? Or will this cause the flare to detach?

Thanks

You could get replacement rivets or just try to hammer it in.

Napa part number: BK 7702871

The dealer parts department probably have them in stock. I'm not sure what they cost, I think I paid around $.50 a piece.

To install them, I used 2 sets of pliers, one to hold the rivet in place and one to pull the central piece. It helps to have someone pull while you hold the rivet flush with the wheel well.

Finally cut off the central piece of plastic with side cutters or linemans pliers. They probably make a tool, but I didn't bother.

Haven't stopped by the dealer yet, but thought I might have installation figured out, maybe:

Is this something simple similar to a ziptie kinda thing? Rivet with plastic stem fed through from tire side, other rivet slides onto the stem from bumper side and slides to tightness, clip off excess? Or something like that?

If not, how do I put this thing together?

I tore my rear left fender part-way off of the door from stuffing so much this past weekend. After washing all of the mud out I just popped in one of the rivets I removed from the front fender during my bull bar install a while ago. This rivet is slightly larger and hopefully won't break as easily (doubtful). Maybe try to grab some of the larger front rivets from the dealer. Two rivets broke. I used the plastic one mentioned above to replace the rivet that held the fender to the steel door and a steel rivet with a washer to replace the rivet that held the fender to another piece of plastic. For the first rivet I didn't want a steel rivet wearing down the paint and causing rust.

Talked to the Jeep Dealer in town here and he has them in stock, but $3.20 a peice??????? Seems like a ripoff...

Nope, that's what they cost and there isn't much markup on them either. To do these correctly, you need a special rivet gun made for plastic rivets. Most dealers and body shops should have one and will probably let you borrow it to pop them in real quick. If not, you can do a satisfactory job with the two pliers method as stated above, just be sure to pull straight out and not at an angle or you can snap off the post and never get the rivet tight.

I popped a few off my left rear after packing it full of mud about 3 years ago. I went to Pep Boys and pick up a pack of rivets that are sort of threaded. I just pushed them thru and they haven't come off since. Cheap and quick fix.

Do yourself a favor and stop by a good autoparts store.

The dealer price is complety insane (they usually are).

You can get a whole package of the push in plasitic body rivets for about 5 bucks. Napa has them for sure... 8)

X3 That rivet gun is pretty handy too. Makes it go in easy and come out clean. Uuuuh yeah.

PS. So, do you play the blues, Bluesman or just like to listen?

As a matter of fact I do play the blues. I am lead guitarist/lead singer for a 3 peice here in Corpus - we play classic rock/blues. All the great juke box hits and I always try to do a few SRV songs in there.

Thanks for the tips guys on the rivets - will try the auto parts one first. Then if I jack that up, I can always try it the dealer way.

Ok went to Napa and got the box of 20. Now since these just slide into the rivet sleeve, what do I need to know about installing them? Do I just slip the old ones out and slip these in? What holds them in place?

Thanks

You'll want to drill out the center of the old rivet then yank it out. Putting the new rivets in, well that's where the rivet gun comes in handy. With the gun you just shoot em in the hole. The bottom of the rivet's shaft sucks up and the sides spread out. This holds the rivet in place. Somefolks use pliers and such, but the gun is pretty cheap and it puts em in clean.

On a side note, I play sax in some groups in New Orleans. We do the occasional SRV and tons of blues. Good to have another musician on the board.

Sorry, I've missed this thread up until now. I staked my flares back on with 1/4"x1" aluminum rivets. Much stronger than the plastic garbage that comes stock. Of course you're either going to need a pnuematic riveter or an industrial rivet gun to get them installed.

I was blowing flares off right and left, until TJKJ2002 let me in on his secret. Trust me, it works.
