Post subject:  Where's my fuel pump??

Ok, KJ making a high pitched, tea kettle whistle like sound from the back right when really hot. Drove into Jeep & they said it's the fuel pump. 60k miles and they say it's to be expected. Other mechanics I know seem to agree. Gonna run about $500 w/installation.
Question is: Where is it located? Do they drop my fuel tank or do they access it from possibly inside the rear cargo area? Reason I'm asking is that my cargo area is crammed w/crap and I need to know whether I need to empty it before tommorow?

It's in the tank. Front-upper side. Just jack up the rear and set it on stand to let the axle drop down. I don't think you have to drop the tank on the KJ, but I could be wrong.

Go to a Schucks/ Kragen/ Checker parts store (Napa works too), it will alot less than the dealer.

I'm about 95% sure you have to drop the tank to get to the fuel pump. I haven't seen or heard of too many KJ fuel pumps going out though, so I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you are having a problem.

If the 03s are like the 02s then:

Quote:
The electric fuel pump is located inside of the fuel
pump module. A 12 volt, permanent magnet, electric
motor powers the fuel pump. The electric fuel pump
is not a separate, serviceable component.

Quote:
Fuel tank removal will not be necessary for
fuel pump module removal. Access is from rear
cargo area.

Quote:
The fuel pump module is divided into 2 sections,
upper and lower. To service the check (control) valve,
replace only the upper section. To service the fuel
gauge sending unit, remove the upper section. To service
the electric fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator or
primary inlet filter, remove both sections and replace
lower section.

Just brought it to service @ Jeep. Serv manager says we have to drop the tank, bring it back another day when it's empty. I explained that the serv man says tank drop is not neccessary and I made the appt for today so I could get it done today. I told him that I would have brought it in empty if it was neccessary to drop the tank. He seems confused and says "well, if the fuel level is to high we may still need to drop the tank." :? I say "whatever" and start to leave. Then I realize that my work order says "replace WATER pump"! WTF!!
I go back and get that fixed and tell him to replace the fuel filter while he's under there. Get a call at home later saying they don't have a fuel filter at either dlr and could I leave it over night. I say forget it. How can a dlr not have a simple fuel filter in stock? Nor get one the same day?! :?

Because its not a simple fuel filter. It doesn't need to be changed. It has a return line from the filter back to the tank, and this return line keeps the upstream side of the filter clean and flushed.
Nobody stocks the filter because its a lifetime part. A new one is about $140 from the dealer. If you find a parts shop that sells hastings filters, they make the filter for chrysler, and you may be able to order the hastings for about $100.

The tank does not have to be dropped, there is a removable door under the carpet in the back... but it makes things much easier to get the pump lid lock ring off when you drop the tank. The lockring has to be driven from about 4 different angles with a large brass drift and a hammer.

Ok, that clears up some things! :D Thanks!
I did find a replacement filter online for around $60 - says it fits the lib but it didn't look the same so I passed. Guess I don't need one after all.
