this weekend i was turning around in the middle of a narrow gravel road well i put my front tires over the edge in the grass on the other side stoped and put it in reverse and tried to back up and i couldnt my tires wouldnt spin or anything. the motor reved up to about 2000 and held there with out the libby backing up. to get out i had to use 4lo. is this just the nature of the trans or is it time for me to go and talk to my dealer :?

If you search around there are tons of threads on this. The tranny sucks in the libby. Needs an aftermarket torque converter.

It is not the torque converter that is the problem but rather the weight to gear ratio problem
I have a '02 F250 with the 5.4 V8 engine and it has the same trans as the big gas V10 so not a week trans but if I am on dry pavement or even hard dirt and I try to pull a very heavy load ,like another 2wd pu stuck in the mud, the engine will rev to 2000rpm or more but the tires will not spin (over 800# in tools in the tool boxes)
If you look at it as a power to weight ratio ,# per hores power, then the gas liby has about 20# per horse not counting gears
Now factor in gears I know that with 3.73's and 225/75 16's I can get them to smoke in forward and reverse if I can keep the jeep from moving ,when you put on larger tires then you change that ratio from 3.73 to probably 3.27 maby 3.55 and you also give it better traction to not slip or spin so some thing has to give and rather than the thing just breaking a U-joint the trans slips
I would bet dollars to dimes that if you could changed from the 3.73 gears to 4.56 gears with the 245/75 tires then you would never have the trans slipping
I think that if you are going to run bigger tires then you have to change your gears or you have to live with the fact that you will need 4lo to back up a hill

Jason, if you notice, he does not have a lift and it looks like he still has stock tires.

Like everyone said, that is just the nature of the tranny. Very tall reverse gear and not enough low-end power on the KJ to make up for it. Solution is just want you did. Use 4-low. You don't need 4-low to back up every hill though, even with larger tires. 245/75R16s are only 5% larger than stock, so tires are not that much of a difference. Mine backs up just fine on most normal hills. Just on very steep hills, climbing over something or out of something 4-low is often necessary.

Let me take a SWAG, you attemped to back uphill??? Basically you may have problems backing up-hill due to a fluid flow problem. Check around, there are other threads on the problem. DC claims there is no fix but mine is not as bad since having the tranny filters replaced and the fluids topped.

Just to ease your mind, I had the same problem with my '05 Limited last winter. I pulled up to my mailbox and there was an incline that rested between my front and back wheels. When I went forward even in 4 wheel drive it wouldn't go. I didn't even hear tires spinning. I put it in 4 low and away I went. Otherwise the tranny works fine. Go figure.
