Post subject:  Ball Joint Recall: Updated Information

I just got off the phone with my mechanic and here's what he told me about the ball joint recall.

They should start receiving the parts within the next couple of weeks. Jeep is producing them at a rate of approx. 41,350 per week (5% of the total 827,000, per week). Notices will then be sent out starting with 2002 year models then moving on to 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 (2007?).

So it looks the process is going to take a while and part availability will be sparse.

Think of all the people out there that do not have a clue about this yet. They wont know about it until they get that letter in the mail. I guess they are starting with the 02's b/c they are the oldest and want to make sure they are taken care of first. If they sent letters to everyone at once, the would would stop turning b/c everyone would move at once.

i've got an appointment for monday... will i have to do anything to 'break in' the new joints?

The important question here is this: If you've set up an appointment already, are you getting the new joints or the old ones they still have sitting around? Is there even any difference?

I had mine done today. They have all new ball joints. After the service guy got in my liberty and pulled it forward about 20 feet, he walked back to the computer and said to me "That's a Cherokee right? "

Yeah! You should've said, yes, it is a Cherokee and those darn fools at the factory put an IFS on it. Can you fix it right and make it solid axle?

I doubt the guy knows what an IFS or an axle is. I figured if I joked around with him, he would get confused and screw up my service. He must have been new. I was just happy he helped me as soon as I got there. It must take a few weeks before they learn to ignore you for ten minutes then say " what can I do for you today "

WoW! 10 minutes! At my dlr, you have to arrive WELL PRIOR to 7:30 am whether you have an appt or not. You have to stand on line till they open the service door at PRECISELY 7:30, not a second sooner. Then they write u up one at a time and actually start work around 8:30 on a fisrt come first serve basis. If you're not there in that "prior to 7:30 wave" they won't even write you up! They only have you make an appt to see if they will even get to you that day to schedule in big work. I've even shown up for a "while you wait instant oil change" (they actually have a sign outside that says that) and had to wait 3 hrs for it! So much for "customer oriented business".

I called yesterday to schedule an oil change and was told that I could bring it in NEXT WEDNESDAY! If it wasn't free I'd do it myself. Plus, they still owe me rivets from when they changed my fuel pump and had to pull up the cargo tied downs.

not to sound stupid, but if they were going out, would it make a clunking noise when backing up into reverse, and when in drive a scraping noise like metal hitting the street?? i dont really know much about this stuff

the clunking noise if you were turning or going over a bump, but i think the scraping noise is something different!! you definitely need to get that checked out!!! do have a lift or bigger tires?
