Anyone seen the conversion writeup in the Nov 06 issue of 4Wheel Drive? (pg 64)
They adapted a Klune V reduction housing to an NP231 case but said it would bolt up to the NV242 stock case ('02). Comes down to a 243:1 gear reduction. It's nice to see a mag making the KJ more trail worthy instead of bashing it. :D

There's also a Liberator writeup in the October issue of the same magazine. Don't say much about it except "The spare tire which normally sits underneath the Jeep is now located in the cargo area." Whoops!

Yea I bought that issue just for the Liberator article. I wonder when they will finish their build-up...they also montioned the 231HD with super-short SYE that looked promising for the KJ.

Are you sure its 243:1? It would take you forever to go 10feet. The current ratio is 2.73:1.

From their website

If your vehicle is fitted with the "David" Extreme Underdrive, you receive four different Transfer Case ranges:

Normal High Range

Low Range

A 4.0 Crawl Range

Plus an EXTREME crawl range FOUR TIMES AS LOW AS YOUR EXISTING LOW RANGE! (for those super technical spots you want to really creep through)

EDIT
looks like there are two variations
If your vehicle is fitted with the "Goliath" Extreme Underdrive, you receive three different Transfer Case ranges:

Normal High Range

Normal Low Range

An additional "crawl" range 2.7 TIMES AS LOW AS YOUR EXISTING LOW RANGE

So which one did they use?

Why? Without ground clearance the super low crawl ratio would be useless.

The Klune with the 2.7:1 ratio might be nice for the 2WD guys...

The big problem with the higher Crawl Raito is that the higher the Crawl Ratio...the higher the twisting force (torque)...the easier to break things...

How much slower do you have to go? I feel like I need to get out and push the CRD in low range now, especially going downhill.

Isn't that the point?

FWIW, The KJ pic on the article is of Annettes old KJ, "drvnmstilli". The pic was taken from the run we did w/ the magazine and was featured in an earlier issue. That KJ was totaled in a roll over accident and Annette has since moved on to a Rubicon and a new name, "yazhi". Prettty cool to see her old KJ live again in a new magazine article. :)

243 to 1 ratio is for serious rock crawling. The CV shafts and front diff aren't made to go vertical. They would definetly break. That would be nice with a SAS.

What would be the cost of everything to put in the NP231 and Klune V?

By time you buy a Klune V and do a HD SYE on the 231/242 you are almost the cost of an Atlas....or Stak.
4 speed atlas is basically an atlas with a Klune built in....both are using the 6 gear planetary from a 241.... (or in the case of Klune a custom 4:1 planetary is available)
There are kits to make your own Klune like range box with a cut up 231/241.
For rhe money and time, if you are making a KJ into a hardcore crawler, Just bite the bullet and go Atlas....JMHO

But it is cool to see a Libby get press :)

the current transfer case ratio is 2.73:1. The 243:1 they are referring to is the overall reduction that the case can provide, which is basically your new crawl ratio.

Klune-V ratio X NP231 ratio X trans 1st gear ratio X axle gear ratio = overall reduction (crawl ratio)
