May be old news but first time I've seen it in print:
"Because the Liberty's GVWR is less than 6,000 pounds, it is difficult to get the 2.8L CRD-stuffed Jeep to pass emissions. It could be done, but since the diesel Liberty was just an experiment, it wouldn't be a worthwhile investment for Daimler-Chrysler to make the engine pass. But expect a clean-burner to return around 2008 when the Liberty is redesigned."
(JP Magazine - Sept '06)

We all knew the CRD was ended early, but this is the first thing in print I've seen hinting of a diesel option returning at all! :D

Let me think about how I feel about owning a $26k 'experiment'...

Well, for me I am glad to be part of this experiment. It has it flaws but was the cheapest new diesel SUV/Truck on the market.

The 2.4L version of the engine had been sold in the Liberty in Europe and Australia since beginning of the Liberty, so I wouldn't exactly call it an "experiment". It was only a sales experiment in the US to see if they could sell a high powered, fuel efficient engine in a small bodied, medium weight SUV. Sounds hard...

I read somewhere that DC sold around twice as many CRD's as they first expected. I would say that was a successful experiment. The 2.8L CRD did not meet 2007 emissions standards in California and other states using the Cali emissions standards. With the basic design of the engine being more than 5 years old and the reduced sulphur deisel fuel supposed to be hitting the market in 2007-2008, it's probably a good time to break production and redesign the engine.

I did see some tv commercials (yes, I managed to stay awake and pay attention for all 30 seconds of those stupid DC commercials) over the summer that mentioned development of new, fuel efficient, reduced emissions deisels for 2008 model vehicles. No mention of specific models.

The 2008 Libertys, Grand Cherokees and Commanders are going to get the new 3.0 liter Mercedes Diesel engine as an option. The spes are pretty goood, less gas milage, better power and they are supposed to be able to meet current EPA standards.

The AMC Eagle was the "cheapest" domestic 4x4 car on the market too.

Should add that there is a big difference between an engineering experiment and a marketing experiment. Personally more concerned about the Jeep falling apart from around the diesel than the diesel coming apart. Yes it's quirkey and the overall economics are marginal, still happy to have one.
