| Post subject: | Synthetic Oil vs Normal SAE?? |
Hi, I was thinking about changing to Synthetic oil on my last oil change 60K 2003 renny. My mechanic said if you stay on top of the oil changes not to go w/ synthetic because (1. It costs alot more and (2. new regular oil + good oil filter is better changing more often than not changing sooner because you have synthetic. Would anyone like to chime in w/ an opinion on this? |

Does your mechanic change your oil now? |

My dad is a mechanic and he goes with sythetic in his vehicles. He's on to the theory that changing less is better (synthetic). He also says that he can 'feel' when he needs to change the oil. |

Synth is better IMO. It makes the engine feel cleaner/smoother than it does w/ dino oil. |

I use full synthetic(Amsoil) and change oil every 7500 miles or 6 months whichever comes first. A good synthetic oil beats a good conventional oil in performance and durability any day. I test my oild at every change to ensure that nothing is wrong with the motor and that the oil is performing properly. |

If you change dino at 3000 you will probably be fine...but...the dino does not perform as well as synthetic at the get go. It also breaks down (shears) faster and viscosity changes with dino multigrades with pressures in the engine. Synthetics resist shearing with longer chains (molecular), hold viscosity under high pressures and temperatures much better than any dino and last longer. You can always spin off the oil filter every 3,000 and top off with new sysnthetic. That way you can stretch out the changes, get the benefits of synthetic and keep if clean (piece of mind). |

If I put synthetic blend, and don't drive 1,000 per month, my last oil change was way over 3 months, but I just reached 3,000 around august. I only drive about 300 miles/month. Is that bad? |

I prefer synthetic. Technology is cool. |

If your using regular oil you go 3/3000. Which ever comes first. You might be better off with synthetic. |

Thanks, I would feel like I'm killing my kj if i changed the oil only 2x's a year or 7500 miles. My mechanic is a friend who has a shop so i get it done there do to the ease of a lift. He's not really making any money i bring my own oil and filter, drink a few beers and thats it.. |

Most of the fluids in your jeep are already syn, why not the oil too. I think my Liberty had 2000 miles on the clock when I changed over to syn. |
