The manual tells you the max speed when it 4 HI is 55mph... would the car allow you to go faster than 55 in 4HI? what would happen?

Nothing would happen and yes you can go faster than 55.

What they are saying is if you have a situation where you need 4 Hi and you also need to go over 55 mph, you are in need of help from people we can recommend, but we ourselves don't associate with. These same people also give out free drugs and lodging.

You guys are killin' me, and I just woke up :P

My understanding is that 55 is top speed that Jeep recommends that you shift into 4HI; you can go faster than that once it is in 4hi, but again, if you are in a situation where you NEED 4HI I don't think you wanna go that fast

Your jeep can go over 55 mph in 4hi, BUT I wouldn't shift in and out at those speeds. That's putting a little to much on the transfer case. I try to slow down to slow role before I shift into 4hi or back into 2hi. I'm a police officer and I'm trying to think about situations where I would drive over 55 mph in 4hi...............I would never recommend driving over 55mph in 4hi. Even a little turn would make the front and rear tires turn at different speeds and generate wheel spin on loose surfaces. That could cause loss of control and in soft surface you could easily role over. Chances are, if you can drive 55 mph in 4hi safely you would be able to do so in 2hi.

Wes

After thinking about situations maybe some type of racing..........but I don't think I would use Liberty in 4x4 racing.

Thanks for the interesting question, never thought about this before.

If it were for racing then I think you'd want a full-time 4WD system that will let the front and rear turn at different rates. The system on the Libbys just isn't made to go that fast. I think 35-40 is the fastest I have had mine and that was in very wet conditions.

I presume your talking about 'part time' 4Hi...on the command trac transfer case. I have the 'full time' option and often just drive about in that all the time...think it's safer all round. No problems at all at highway speeds.

But then I live in the UK so if it's not raining there's something wrong! :D

4WD= all wheels give power and turn at same speeds.

AWD=all wheels give power BUT DO NOT turn at same speeds. Requires third (center) differential.

check out www.jeepspeed.com

i ran my 87 xj in a few rally crosses. stock motor. stock trans, 24rle. stock transfer case,np242.
prety much the same drivetrane in the KJ. i smoked 13 subaru wrx (not sti) and hit speeds of 120mph in 4-hi.

the jeepspeed guys take the 4-low componets out of the tranfer case to save weight and remove the selector lever all together.

I was driving on the interstate at 70 and a sudden very hard hard rain started. I backed off the gas and at the same time pulled into 4 full time (selec-trac) and realized I was going over 55. It just smoothly went right in with no problem. It was like a reflex and the only time I did that. As I was slowing down to 45 or so due to the change in visibility I was concerned about it. But nothing bad happened. I never did it again and wouldn't recommend it. Just saying nothing bad happened - not even a sound.

I know the topic was about 4 high but with the selec-trac you go through 4 high to get to 4 full time.

Every other time I engaged 4 high or full time I was going under 30 or so.

I think it all has to do with wheel speed snd the sliding thing because in 4hi 1 front and 1 back ,unless fully locked, must be going the same speed so if you turn both the fronts and both the backs will be going 2 differant speeds and some thing must give
but with the full time thing that my wife has in hers she uses it all the time in hard rain and will NEVER spin a wheel at any speed even on thoes "known" slick spots and she runs down the interstate at well over 70mph in the rain

When you engage the t-case at 55, clutches slip so it eases into gear.
