Has anyone tried applied clear plastic protection (like the stuff they add to the front of hoods to prevent rock chips) to the lower portion of their doors?

I did a good wash job yesterday on my KJ and noticed that there are a lot of rock chips in the paint on the lower portion of the doors.

I tried to talk the wife into letting me Rhino line the whole Liberty. Her answer was, "No."

^, hmmm, I dont think I want to know what thats about.

Ive always wanted to try that stuff, Ive heard it clouds the paint though. The stuff you use to put it on with never dries out b/c its under the plastic. Its then baked INTO the paint and is very hard to get out.

I am seriously considering the clear vinyl for both Jeeps and have been doing some research.

Read the forum at http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=28556

Down toward the bottom of that page is a discussion of 4 different brands of vinyl and his opinon of which is better/easier to apply. He seems to know what he is talking about.

Bottom line for me is the kit at http://invinca-shield.com/n_genkit.asp?kit=2323&ft=2 for the Liberty and a kit for the Rubi.

Charlotte's 97 Mercury Mountaineer had that vinyl on the front bumper and below the doors and it was great. After 85K miles the only damage I could find on the front bumper was a few places where rocks had hit the vinyl and left a mark but none of the rocks actually penetrated the vinyl and/or chipped the paint.

We are leaving for Buena Vista, CO Wednesday for a couple of weeks and when we get back I am going to order the vinyl for both and some touch up paint so I can fix the rock chips I have already gotten before I apply the vinyl.

Anyone in the Buena Vista area that wants to run some easy trails and see the Aspens can PM me and I will give you a cell phone number. We will be in an RV park in BV from Sept 23 until Oct. 7.

Post subject:  Undercarriage coating

I did the undercarriage of my old Mitsu Montero vehicle. I got rid of it years ago but it lasted all the time I had it, not one chip or peal. It was on for about four years. I bought some at Grainger part# 2PE16. I’m planning to do the same to the Liberty before winter kicks in. It’s very easy to do, it also helps silence some of the road/trail noise and very inexpensive about $4 a can.

Carnage, I thought you were talking about the plastic protection until you mentioned "can."

Someone mentioned Line-X bed liner and Rhino liner, so I thought I’d talk about my experience, I did mention in the Subject Undercarriage coating. Sorry to throw you off. :P
