well the first major malfunction. 140,000 .. cant complain. Pulling away from a toll booth she went to set the cruise and it started surging back and fourth, kinda like a fuel filter. Untill the engine light started blinking. She made it to the next exit where it took a crap. 70 miles from home, and I was on my way, good luck I have access to a trailer. Checked all the fluids,ok. removed the battery to reset the computer, and tried the ignition, turns over and starts, KINDA. If i put it to the floor. I think its running on about 3 cylinders. (half of them).

Smells like pure gas at the booty end, and crawled on the traiker its own strength. SHes goin to the shop tomorrow. Im thinking pcm? since it has indvidual coils for each plug and Im guessing its unlikely that more than 1 would go out at once.
Anyone have Ideas????????

I don't have a clue.

it kinda sounds like some kind of timing problem. Our Yukon did something similar to what your describing and all they had to do is reflash the computer and everything was good.

Wow! 140k! Thats the highest yet I do believe! Sounds like something isnt getting fire if you smell gas. Maybe a crank sensor?

Camshaft position sensor? Probably wouldnt run at all if that went out though.
Has the timing belt been changed yet? Maybe it slipped a notch. Or is it a chain. :?

Vacuum leak?

There are so many stupid sensors that could go out it is ridiculous. Lets just hope they get the diagnosis right the first time.

Not really... highest is 190k. ;) Judging by the way that guy drives, that Jeep should have well over 220k by now.

hopefully it won't end up like my Dodge Avenger Engine....worked and then one day did a lurch and whine on me after pulling away from a red light....it had 90K+ and was 10 years old at the time...took the engine apart to find 2 valves mashed into the header...craziest thing since the piston wasn't damaged and no engine light came on...i need to get pics of that too by the way...will have them up by the weekend...

My XJ did that and it was the crankshaft position sensor.

Fouled fuel injection system. That what did me in. Same MO. Lucky for me it was covered.

Maybe bad gas, i.e. water in the fuel?
Was it on empty and sucking up the water remnants of an accumulation of bad gas, or did you just fill up at the super cheapo station?
44K fron Napa cleans injectors pretty well.....
Good luck! :D

Any of a number of things could have thrown the engine into "limp" mode, which is how it sounds like it's running. Bad sensor, pcm, fuel injection, blown valve... Depending on wiring it could just be a blown fuse.

** a buddy of mine just had the 60A fuse for the spark plugs go on a honda civic I sold him a year ago. Running and then off...

It could be anything. Let us know what the mechanics say!

Got a call from the dealership. They said they had to replace the sparkplugs, and then did a compression test, the #4 cylinder has 0 compression, and told me I need a reman engine. WTF!! I asked him if he noticed the coolant was a tad low and if they checked for a possible head gasket, which reply I got was.... we usually replace a motor, want a price? Then decided to tell me the reman has a 30k warranty.

Needless to say, Im not happy with thier work. Not to mention I can have my local mechanic get me a JASPER reman engine with a 75k warranty. I'll be taking the jeep somewhere else, where they can give me a honest opinion instead of "buy this" attitude

you may not even need a new motor. did they pull the valve cover and inspect for a broken valve spring on the effected cylinder? :?: i would take it somewhere else for a comptent opinion. just saying the motor is bad ain't gonna cut it. another thing did they do a wet and dry compression test? sounds like that dealer are a bunch of parts hangers!

All you probably need is the head gasket.

I would take a good look at your oil though.

:? this sounds strange to me, I have a hard time understanding how an engine that really isn't old, could lose compression and die? I have heard it happening to Japanese vehicles and hot rods but this is very different.

Hope all works out for a fix, interested to know what the prob is.
