So, I bought my 2006 Renegade about 3 months ago, and in this three months the clutch has developed a strange clicking noise as I let the clutch back out. It's not too loud, but it's enough to annoy me. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any solutions? By the way, I have about 4,200 miles on it. The noise started at about 1,000. I didn't bother telling the dealer because they're useless... |

That would really begin to bother me if I paid $20K or more for a new vehicle and it started doing stuff like this!! I would definitly take it to the dealer and tell them to handle it immeadiately!!! |

Not sure if this is what you’re talking about but my Jeep's been back and forth to the dealer for a clutch noise. It's especially noticeable during slow engagement/disengagement of the clutch (pedal), which causes a rubbing or non-metallic-type grinding/clicking sound as the pedal is pushed in and released out. Engine on or off, in gear or neutral, doesn’t matter. You can tell it's not in the clutch assembly itself, but rather the pedal, pushrod, or maybe the hydraulic system. I had my hydraulic system replaced and it still makes noise. Sounds like someone is grinding their teeth and provides a bit of a “binding” resistance sometimes in traffic. All pedal bushings were lubed as well. Dealer can't seem to figure it out. I guess it’s just in the design. Love the 6-speed, not happy with the clutch pedal action, but I’ve learned to live with it. I’d at least get it documented. Hope you have better luck. |

I think there were some issues with them popping out of reverse. Of course, there's always the typical "crunch" into second but they tend to smoothen out after about 20K. |

Yeah, my fear was that the dealer would just mess something else up, and tell me the clutch was fine. Then I'd have two problems. I agree about the money, and I payed almost 28k for it (before rebates, of course). So I don't know what to do... Sometimes it's there, and sometimes it's not. Yesterday it did it all day and today it only did it for about 10 minutes of my 45 minute commute. It sounds like it's in the pedal to me. It's basically a louder version of the noise the brake pedal makes (get down right beside the pedals and push the break pedal in... you'll hear a very quiet click). Also, you can sort of feel it in the pedal when it clicks... and the click feeling has moved arround, it's getting closer to the floor (So, it used to do it when the clutch was almost all the way out, and now it does it about halfway between the pedal being on the floor and having the pedal all the way out). Still think I should drag it to the dealer? |

Take it to the dealer. My '06 6 speed has about 3,000 miles on it so far and makes no noises whatsoever. No shifting problems with mine either. |

All I can say is, you are dead on with your description. I didn't notice mine making noise until about 8,000 miles but it also hasn't gotten much worse. It gets pretty bad in a lot of stop and go traffic but like I said, it's just something I got used to and the 6-speed is a blast to drive. |

Since all the 6spd guys are here (i.e., sorry to hijack) does anyone else have a problem with ESP doing a throtle reduction when you pull out and accelerate hard? |

Yes, I have numerous issues with the ESP system. I live in the mountains of Virginia and just about every street is up or down so you are frequently pulling off of a hill and into traffic. I can't count how many times the ESP has thought I was rolling over at 15 MPH or some such crap and killed the throttle only to leave me broadside in the lane with traffic coming at me while the Jeep tries to stall and screw around. When I get it back in here in the shop to have all my front door window regulators replaced (Grrrrr...) I am going to get with the Tech and see if StarScan can disable the system without messing with the ABS or traction control. The button on the steering column helps in some cases, but it seems the ESP system can override the switch and kick on even when it is clearly turned off. All in all, I think the ESP system is a pile of crap on a manual trans vehicle. |

OK... I'll make an appointment at the dealer... It's nice to know that somebody else is having the problem... I never notice the ESP much, but I baby my Jeep. It never sees much more than 2,000 to 2,300 rpms when I accellerate. I see how it could be an issue though... it would be annoying, I'm sure it feels like throttle lag on an automatic... ick. Thanks again, guys! I love this website more and more everyday. |

I would have the dealer replace/inspect both pilot bearing and throwout bearing also. The pilot bearing would be making noise, if bad, while you are idling with the clutch press in. The Throwout Bearing would be making noise anytime you use the clutch pedal. A far fetched answer could be where the starter and flywheel meet...maybe the solenoid is not completely disengaging the starter gear and it is making contact... |

Naw, I had a throwout go bad in my S-10, you can hear that from under the car... this is FOR SURE in the pedal assembly. I had my girlfriend sit in it and play around with the clutch while dad and I crawled around underneath it... nothing. She still refuses to drive it though, I've tried to talk her into it a few times. Thanks though, Darby! |

Is it making the "noise" even with the engine off? If so, there is probably someplace in the assembly that is dry...no lube. I would WD40 everywhere and see if it dissappears. |

Hmm... I might try that after work tonight... thanks for the idea. It does do it after the engine is off... but it seems to get (not much) quieter last I remember... |

Just be careful if/when you lube some of the parts. Some dealers (if they want to be difficult about it) may claim you caused the problem by lubing the parts yourself. ESP issue: I don't have ESP on my Jeep but I do have another really annoying issue: I tend to notice an intermittent hesitation in throttle response (have noticed it since it was new) when I suddenly hit the accelerator in any given gear. You can actually hear more air getting sucked into the engine but it takes about 1 second for the fuel to start spraying in. Dealer can't solve this problem either. Still, nothing that terrible and it doesn't happen all the time. Just thought it may also be related to the PCM for the 6-speed. |

I might punch it on the way home just to see what's up. I'll let you know what I find out when I get home. |
