| Post subject: | Bad wheel bearings |
Did anyone ever have to replace their front wheel bearings? for the past 6K miles (it started at a 110,000 miles) I am getting a harmonic sound thats coming from the front wheels. I elminated tranny , engine noise I had tires rotated and balanced twice ( Michline cross terrain tires) . It sounds like road noise from a bad tire and also when I turn direction of the wheel the pitch of the sound changes. Any suggestions of any thing else. All fluids are good tranfer case, front differential, transmission. thanks |

I had to replace mine...It is a sealed unit that has four bolts to hole in the whole piece...mine backed out. You have to replace the whole assembly...make sure you let them know what year and if your KJ came with or without ABS so it has the correct fittings. |

I still have a problem with a humming sound in the front end. I really believe mine is coming from inside the right side of the differential. I took it to the dealer and they said it was a wheel bearing on the left side. From testing it myself I had a strong feeling that wasn't the case but, after paying them their rip off "troubleshooting" fee and enduring their speech on my lift, I took it home and changed the left side out myself (not a hard job). Guess what? sound is still there. Here is how I tested it: Hear sound driving home, immediately lift each tire off the ground, one at a time and have son turn wheel while I layed underneath with a stethescope and hone in on the sound. Sound only occurred when right wheel was turned and left one was on the ground. Wheel bearing assy cost $155.00. The sound bothers me but I think I'm gonna take Quinns advice and wait to see if the sound gets louder, then repair it myself and install a trutrac while I'm in the differential. The dealers really piss me off. Ours suck in Salt Lake area. They are obviously just interested in the money, nothing else. Next time I will follow my own troubleshooting ideas, they make you believe its magic or something, then give it to their teenage "mechanics" to jack it up for you. |
