No, they are not putting a 4.0 in the libby.

I was reading through the lastest issue of Motor Tread and they said they were putting one in it. I went to jeep.com and built one to make sure but it wasnt there.. Is this a typo, or is it going to happen? :?

I saw that too, but I'd bet it's a v6 4L, but... at least it's not a minivan engine

Yea, its the new v-6 that I heard will go in the wrangler to replace the minivan engine. It has 255hp and Id say more torque so it would be a nice improvement over the 3.7L.

I don't have any problems with the 3.7, but I haven't towed my camper over 10k passes... yet.

I would say it does great with the manual tranny. The auto tranny in the libby really holds it back since its only a 4 speed. I wish I had the 45rfe so I had the alternate 2nd downshift. I dont like to let it downshift into 2nd at 55mph b/c the rpms shoot up to 4500...

Try 12K passes

The new engine in the Wrangler is a 3.8L from a van...not 4.0L

The 4.0L I6 is dead. No more, gone, vanished!! It will either be the 3.7 or 3.8. I don't think they will put 3.8 in the KJ, they'll probably just stick with the 3.7. Maybe DC will put a different engine in the KK.

I'm not gonna bash it until I've driven it. The thing to remember is that the entire drivetrain is different from a van and Jeep hasnt forgotten about how awesome their 4Lo is.

We are not talking about the I-6.. This is a new engine that is a V-6... Its has 255hp and Im not to sure about the tq.

Don't worry, I've found a lot of people don't read the whole thread before responding.... :(

Also, I have the 3.8 in the minivan (although with the renny tires on it now, it looks much better) and it is a nice engine. I'm sure Jeep will but a nice tranny on it, but it will help defend the honor of KJ's when someone makes a comment about the grocery hooks...

Minivan engine? First application for the 3.8L was a car.

First application for the 4.2L (258) I-6 was a car.

I see a correlation here. :)

You must be talking about Loveland. I worked there last summer on both sides of the pass. Gorgeous country...but what's with Denver drivers? You guys are nuts!

Hey, my KJ does not have grocery hooks :D

The 4.0 V6 is the new optional engine in the Dodge Nitro (the R/T get's it standard). Have not seen it mentioned anywhere for the existing Liberty, but would guess it may be an option in the next generation.

According to the Nov Motor Trend article (2007-08 Buyer's Guide) the 255 HP 4.0L V6 will be an optional engine in the '07 Liberty. That's a nice jump in HP, and puts it up there close to the 4.7L V8. Anybody know what that 4.0's torque output will be? The gas economy appears to drop 1-2 MPG.

Should be the same as in the Dodge Nitro, since they share the same platform.

4.0L

for comparison our 3.7L

Well, the 4.0s' HP curve sucks about as bad as the 3.7L. I didnt know our Hp curve was so In-elastic... Our torque curve is really good though. Stays over 200 through the entire curve..

HP is a function of torque and rpm. So if you have 200lb-ft of torque at 1200rpms you are going to have only around 45HP no matter what type of engine. Only way to increase low-end power is to increase low-end torque.

HP is unit of power. Torque is a way of expressing force applied through a distance or moment arm. Remember, Power = (work/time). How much work you can accomplish in a set amount of time. Work = Force x Distance. Thus Power = (force x distance)/time. The distance portion of the equation comes from the rotation through the circumference of a circle with a radius equal to distance of the applied force. Thus to get more power you either need to do more work, or do the work faster.

Hence to get more HP you either need more torque, or spin the engine faster.

Take a look at these for a more indepth explaniation
