| Post subject: | strange sounds/lack of steering response in 4hi |
we're having a hell of a nice thunderstorm and most of the streets around here are flooded... as i was driving around i decided to go into 4 hi so i could drive through some rather large puddles with more control/ease. i noticed that when turning the jeep would make a painfull noise, almost a grinding, and it took a lot more effort to complete my turn. when slowing down in 4hi my brakes (maybe?) sounded like i was running over a yelping dog. when i'd switch out of 4hi everything would be fine - i could turn with ease and had no alarming squeals when slowing down. i've been through snow, mudd, and other rainy conditions and have never experienced this before. any ideas as to what this was? |

Normal. You should never use 4hi on any hard surface. It locks the front and rear wheels together which is what causes your problems.. |

Agreed, unless you have the selec-trac transfer case with full time 4wd of course. |

That's normal alright. That's called binding. I have the SelecTrak and put in in 4-part-time (same as your 4-hi) by accident when I first got it and WOW that makes a bit of noise. Heck of a time getting out a parking lot too! Ha! Keep it in 2WD unless you're in sand, dirt, or mud. |

thanks for the info - i've had 4hi on in rainy conditions and have never heard those noises. is it necessarily bad for the jeep to have 4hi on when its not supposed to be on? |

It's bad propotional to the traction. i.e. when you go around a corner - all 4 wheels go through slightly different Arcs - therefore each wheel must turn at different rates. Select track - or Command trac part time forces at at least 1 front and 1 rear to turn exactly the same. Therefore something must give - on slippery roads - it's traction between the road and tire - if you have good traction tire to road - then you could start breaking metal. |

Watch 4hi on snow/ice when turning. I believe it can cause a break in traction which can begin a slide. From what I understand, it can send the back-end around faster than driving in 2wd. |

is it necessarily bad for the jeep to have 4hi on when its not supposed to be on? Its not good to use 4hi on blacktop no matter if it wet or not. Some people will say its ok to use it when its raining, but I wouldnt do it.. Maybe the roads were just really slick allow is to slip when you had it in 4hi or something? |

Well, if I must explain myself, I went muddin offroad. When I pulled back onto the road after muddin, the axles were binding because of the surface not being loose. When the surface is not loose, the binding starts, because the traction is at it's best on a hard surface. You see, 4 wheel drive is made for low traction situations, offroad. How's that bud? Oh by the way, I see that you are jokin. No hard feelings |

What's four wheel drive? Is that what that levery thingy next to the shifter is for? I thought it was just a good place to shove a tissue box. |
