Post subject:  '06 6spd owners - please read

As some of you may know, I'm not a fan of the ESP system on our 6spd KJ's. The reason is the autmatic power limiter that ESP uses to "dog" or "almost stall" the engine when we pull out on a busy road or otherwise make it think we're doing something unsafe. My local Dealer (yes the owner himself) is a Jeeper (Wrangler man though), so he cared about this. He has contacted the regional DCX tech rep about the issue. For those of you who have also experienced a problem with ESP kicking in when it shouldn't have, please contact your local dealer and have them contact your regional tech rep. DCX is going to need more data points on this if they are going to see it as a problem that could get someone killed (i.e., you pull out, ESP dogs your engine, truck hits you, DCX gets a law suit - which is what they don't want).

If you had problems (or even not), let me know. I'm interested in if this is by VIN series, or what. Maybe date of manufacture plays a part.

Ever since I got my lift and tires the ESP has kicked on a few times and it can be pretty annoying. But i like the idea behind ESP so when I don't want it in use I just hit the button to turn it off and no more ESP.

That's fine, but mine kicks in every day. Every time I take it out I engage the thing, and... I want it on. Yes, even though some might think I drive like a mad man, I want the safety features enabled. All I'm wanting is for DCX to re-evaluate how it's programmed, because it shouldn't kick on like it does - at least for me and a few others I know about. When was your 6spd manufactured? I'd like to see if it's related to date.

Thanks.

Mine kicks on everyday too, and I don't have a 6-spd. Usually when I go over 50 on an exit ramp it will kick in and slow me down. I make a note now to turn it off when I get in the truck unless the weather looks bad then I would rather have it on. But on dry sunny days, it is always off.

Yup, I've complained about this before. Mine was built 5/24/06 for what it's worth. I agree, ESP might not be a completely bad thing but the programming is a little too aggressive.

I have noticed how mine kicks in on a particular speed bump I hit when leaving a particular Korean restaurant. Kind of sets my stomach off each time I pack in that currie food.

I have noticed it a couple of other times. Once when I was pulling onto a four lane road in morning traffic and having to make a left turn. I eased off a second and it quickly recovered. A bit unnerving though.

I think I will try driving without it on for a bit and see if there is a difference.

Wow, you guys are making me glad I got an 05 6 speed. I was jealous of the ESP at first, but if all it does is hit the brakes when you don't want it to, maybe I'm better off...

I don't think it hits the brakes. I believe it retards the engine.

Uhh hu hu...you said...

I've noticed several issues with the ESP/Traction Control system. Most of the time it will just cut the fuel and try to stall the engine, the traction control is more than a little ridiculous. Most of the time it just drags the brakes if you pull off to hard, but in an area like mine where there are lots of stops on hills, it thinks I am pulling off too hard all the time. It sort of feels like the engine has no power since it's dragging the brakes. It's gets even more ridiculous when you grab a gear and back the tires. It immediately tries to stop the spin but by the time the system works the tire is moving normally and it just jerks the Jeep around a little. I have experimented with turning the ESP button off, but with limited success since the system will turn back on if it feels the need and since my issue with the system is the sensitivity, it does then more often then staying off. Plus I feel I should have the option to turn the system on or off and leave it that way instead of having to turn it off every time I start the engine.

I have only had it one month, but I have never seen the ESP system turn itself back on.

No. This isn't that ESP is using the ABS, it is electronically cutting the engine back (i.e., cutting fuel), so the ABS portion would cut the safty stuff w/o removing the problem module... Thanks for thinking of us though.

I don't know if this helps anything but I haven't gotten an alignment since I put Al's a arm on and that is when I noticed the ESP kicking in alot. Well I just got an alignment yesterday and WOW what a difference, I am taking the same exit ramp doing 50+ and the ESP is not kicking on like it used to.
