I know this is a board for the Liberty, but I thought some of you would be interested to play around with the Patriot... I was over on www.jeep.com earlier today and the fully loaded version came to around 25K. Looks better than the Compass as well.

...That is all...

Yeah. I messed around with that a little. I definitely agree that it is umpteen times better than the Compass, but I think I would get the Wrangler Unlimited. More aftermarket support, bigger engine, more capable, and just plain cooler. 8)

I just built mine all offroad oriented, for 20 grand and some change, that isn't bad. What sucks, is to get low range, you have to get the auto tranny. So the low range must be in the tranny instead of the transaxle. Over all, it still looks to be a fun vehicle and will be decent on the trails as long as you don't get into the extremes.

What was DCs thought behind the patriot. It basically looks like a liberty, but doesn't have the same engine???

I kind of like it, I'm thinking of checking one out in person this weekend just to see. At first I thought about the Compass online but once I saw it I didnt like it at all. Even thought the Patriot isnt a true offroad vehichle, it might be perfect for me seeing as I dont think I will be offroading with the Liberty. Too much to invest in mods/repairs and I'm only going offroad for fishing/camping and nothing extreme.

Has anyone test drove one yet or are they not on the lot?

The Patriot isn't out in the dealerships yet (that I know of) It's supposed to arrive in a couple of months. When it arrives though - I'm going to be first in line for a test drive.

I just got my sister into a Compass. I know the looks of it are not the greatest, but the CVT transmission is silky smooth and I can't argue with the 24/30 MPG figures that it pumps out. It's a great in-town little Jeep and perfect for my Sister since she does a lot of highway driving.

I think the Patriot is pretty cool looking. I'd bet the performance of the Compass and Patriot will be very similiar on road: both have a 4-cylinder transverse mounted configuration and both are built off of the Caliber/Sebring/Mitsubishi platform. For me it's the 4 wheel independent suspension and lofty MPG estimates that I like the most

That's cool about the Compass, I have nothing against it just wasnt what I wanted looks wise.

I would be interested in checking one out once they hit the lots, looks like I will be second in line behind you. I think it would be a good match for me since I dont do any crazy offroading and the gas mileage is a huge plus!

I dont know though, I do love the KJ too and it has come in handy for me. I guess I will just have to decide after the test drive.

Compass and Patriot have pretty much the same interior.

Speaking of compass, has anyone even seen one on the road? Other than your sister's Sleeve.

The lots here are full of them, but I have not seen one driving around at all in Colorado Springs. I stopped in at a dealer that got them in November, and the salesman said they were trying to give them away real cheap because they had only sold 3 since November!

There are a whole bunch of them (the Compass's) on dealer lots in my area as well, but I do see a few of them on the road every now and again.

I've only seen one Compass on the road, they are ugly as sin IMO. The patriot looks pretty cool for a small wagon though. If I didn't have to tow my boats and trailers I'd look into one. I imagine DC listened to people who said "the Liberty is too small" and designed the next gen and "the Liberty is too heavy, bad on gas" and designed the Patriot. The Compass? I dunno.

To be honest, all rear wheel drive suv 4x4's don't get great mpg, thats just a fact of life, wieght and drag are the 2 main factors. The cute ute's do better because they reduce wieght and drag, they don't have 2-speed t-cases and what not. For true wheeling, the liberty is the better choice. For a bad weather cruiser, get the compass, a mix of the 2 would be the patriot. But still, the patroit will be no kj in the rough. I don't care what jp mag say's, the kj will wheel with the best of them. I'm leaving for W,Va this morning, going to play some more in the mountains with the kj. It's still stock and really impresses me. It can hang with my modded ranger. Ground clearence is the only thing holding it back right now. The kj and ranger make an awesome pair on the trails, both are little, nimble and climb like moutain goats. When the kj gets a lift and some tires, the wife will really be able to keep up with the ranger.

I have seen maybe four Compass' on the road in CT, tons on the lot though. I know I was kind of interested until I actually saw one in person.

As far as the Patriot, it definatley peaked my interest. If it looks good and drives good I may consider it, most of my driving is highway with light offroading. I'm sure the Patriot could handle it with the offroad package they are offering and having high MPG's back again would be great!

If I was a Jeep dealer, I would be pissed off at DC for letting Dodge sell the Nitro and making me wait for the 2008 Liberty. Funny that the Dodge Caliber is selling like hot cakes and the Jeep Compass is not??? I also find it kinda funny that they refer to the Compass as an SUV. The Subaru Forrester and Jeep Compass should not be classified as "SUVs"...

I saw a Compass ad online today that labled it a "URV" - Urban Recreational Vehicle. Seems fitting.

I like it... not for me but I can see it has something to offer the average person especially in gas mileage. At least it will still have some off road capability. Definately better that the Compass

Yep. Clint and some of the other folks test drove them in Moab. Looked like fun. Here's the link.
