I'm going to do a filter and fluid change on my '03 liberty (42rle trans). I've got a couple questions...

I've read a couple of threads that say I need a filter and gasket. Is the gasket a filter gasket? If so will I also need a new pan gasket as well?

How much ATF+4 will I need to refill the tranny?

Last question, do you just throw a funnel in your trans dipstick tube and fill from there, or is there somewhere else you can fill from?

Thanks!
Doc

The gasket and filter are two separate items. The gasket seals the pan and the filter is inside the pan.

Yup just place a funnel in the dipstick tube and fill her up.

It will take approximately 4 quarts. However, that is not exact so add in small amounts and check the dipstick. I'm working on a write-up here that I'll send to you when I complete it.

Also, your transmission might not shift correctly after changing the fluid. Mine didn't. Had a harsh 4-3 down shift. If that is the case you need to take it to the dealer or a trans shop and have them preform a "Quick Learn". A Quick Learn resets the CVIs (clutch volume indexes) and can only be down with computer hookup. Disconnecting the battery will not do a thing, the CVIs are stored in non-volatile memory. It takes less than a minutes to preform with the right computer. Most shops will charge 1/2 hour labor. According to the dealer its pretty common for this to happen after a fluid change and they preform Quick Learn as a standard procedure.

Hope that helps.
