Post subject:  broken tire valve stem

This past week has been very cold here in MN and the tire pressure in all my tires has dropped causing the TPMS to beep and display warnings. This morning I prepared for a 2 hour trip in my 04' Liberty Renegade and decided to fill the tires back to proper PSI. The LR, LF, RF tires went great but then came the RR tire. I couldn't get the darn cap of the valve stem! I spent a couple of minutes trying to twist it off with no luck. Even the guy waiting to use the air compressor in line behind me couldn't get it off! I resorted to grabbing a pliers and slowly started twisting and snap! I broke the tip of the valve stem off! I spent the next 30 minutes in the 10 degree weather changing the tire.

I'll be bringing the tire in to get repaired tomorrow and I'm trying to do some research so I don't get screwed. For all I know it could be a $5 repair, or a couple hundred!? From what I understand the wireless PSI transmitter is built into the valve stem and they cost about $50. I only snapped off the last 1/4 inch of the stem and there are still some threads on it. Will I need to replace the entire stem and transmitter? Do I need to go to my local dealer, or will any tire shop suffice? And the big question is: How much labor is involved with replacing the stem and reprogramming the sensor? I just want to have an idea of what to expect so I don't over pay.

Thanks in advance!!

It's always nice to see a fellow KJer from the frozen northland. I don't have an answer to your question but I'm sure someone will be along shortly that can help. This is one of the better sites that I'm involved in, lots of great info and very little in the way of bickering. Thanks for posting the question. I'm going to check all my valve stems the next time I pull it into the heated shop.

I don't have the tire pressure monitoring system so I don't know anything about it. Assuming the tire pressure monitoring system is not part of the stem, a tire shop will probably charge you between $15 and $25 to fix it. They'll have to unmount the tire ($10), replace the stem ($5) and remount the tire ($10).

If you have the EVIC overhead tire montering system, the valve stems are part of the sending unit on the inside of the rim and are a dealer item that costs about $65.00.

I just got back from the dealer. They charged $57 for the valve stem and $15 to install it. Not too bad for a stupid mistake I guess!

Hey jeepster...Will the ebay stems work with the factory sensors? Or are they an off brand. I searched and only found some kit that didnt mention if it was OE or not.

Thank you sir,

Now to find out if they put the pick up sensors in or not. Anyone ever find what these look like or where they might be located? I am thinking they should be in the wheel wells and inside the back gate. but dont have a clue what to look for.

I would think the evic just picks it up? Not to sure though?

Jeger, I know this doesn't apply to you, but just in case somebody else reads this thread and hits that ebay auction...those are definitely not the sensors for an '04 (PART# 56053030AB). I had '04 sensors installed and they looked nothing like that. They looked more like this.

Well. if yours look like the one above.. That wont help.. I looked everywhere on ebay and all the ones I saw looked like the one I posted. I would rather have the ones like I posted b/c they would tuck up under the lip of the rim. If I air down, the ones like yours will get broken..

The ones i have are definitely not flat like the picture from the auction and pretty much like the ones from that link. And from what i've read, the '05 sensors won't work with an '04 evic, and those look like '05 sensors. I also noticed in your sig that you have steel wheels...this note from here about tpms and steel wheels:

"Note that for aftermarket steel wheels the training magnet cannot be used and that a 125kHz transponder is necessary to retrain the EVIC to the sensors. This process can be done by the dealer with a DRB-III tool. The ID's of each sensor must be written down and assigned a location (LF, RF, RR, LR, SP). They are then rewritten to tell the EVIC which position each sensor is in."

Ill figure it out. I may train them before I put them in the rims..

don't forget balancing ;) but when I had it done it only cost me $10-15 depending where I went.
