My windshield took a hit from a rock today. I have a nice 1/2 crack now... Can any one suggest any methods or products to prevent the crack from propagating any further, like that windshield goo in a syringe.. super glue a prayer? thanks |

Do you have a deductable on glass in your state? Here in KY, there isn't. The crack just needs to be larger than what can be covered up by a dollar bill. |

Some states require that your insurance replace it free of charge, some don't. I don't trust the do it yourself crack repair. Some might leave a raised spot on your windshield. There are plenty of companies that will come to you to fix it. Expect to pay up to 100 bucks for crack repair. As long as the crack is no bigger than a dollar bill it can usually be repaired. |

Beware...In some states it is illegal to have a cracked window. In others it is illegal for the crack to obstruct the drivers field of view. |

I have used some of those crack repair kits, and had good luck with them. Of course it was on a windshield I didnt care much about. If you absolutely want it to work, and look good, then I would suggest having it done professionally. |

Stop in at a glass shop and they can fill the chip/crack in a few minutes. Shouldn't cost you more than $10-20, depending on the size of the chip. I've had this done several times, they tell me that my 10th one is free...I only pay $15 CDN for smallish chips. My insurance deductible only covers 3 windshields in 5 years, and I'm on my 3rd one now, so I have to pony up for chip filling. Better than paying up to $700 CDN for a new windshield. |

For chips, I've had a big one for two years now. It has a tiny crack (< 1mm) to it also, but it has never grown. Never did anything to fix it. I guess I have been lucky with it. Of course, I just jinxed myself. I am driving 1279 miles this weekend and just know something will happen during that time out amongst the trucks. |

Good luck on the drive, be safe and if you are going with the midwest guys to KY, enjoy as much as you can... |

Another thing that you can do: Go to a glass repair shop (windshield repair and replacement shop) and ask them to "stop drill" the crack. They'll take a drill and put a small circle at the end of the crack line. This will prevent the break from expanding beyond that point and allow you the time to save up the money to replace your windshield without having to file a claim through your insurance company. This method also works good for cracks or tears in sheet metal. |

My poor Libby has a 6" crack. It started as just a little chip in the glass, and over time it has spread. It is too bit to just fix. It doesn't seem to spread much at all, it has spread since I got it initially, but stays about the same. I am planning on just leaving it until inspection unless it gets really bad and goes all the way across. It is in the passenger side of the windshield, at the edge. It only cracked the top layer, it is not all the way through the glass. It sucks, I can't afford the deductible The wierdest part it, I don't remember anything hitting my windshield. I thought to leave a ship in the glass, something hard must of hit with some force, at least enough to hear it! |

Don't need to be anything with force, just has to be solid no matter what size. These windshields are crap. I'm on my 4th windshield (3rd time to replace) due to stones that crack the glass instantly. I've never had an issue like this and I drive on the same highways tehee. Oh well, I guess thats the price you pay when you have a sweet booty Jeep!! LOL |

Some glass companies can just call your insurance and deal with it themselves. I replaced my windshield a couple of months ago and no less than a week later I had 3 chips in it. I put some clear nail polish on them to keep them from spreading (though only one started too) and it helped til I could get someone to fill them in. |

Wonder what its like to drive a wrangler? Even worse. I've heard stories of people not being able to get home after a windshield replacement without it getting chipped. 2.5 years of KJ driving... no cracked or chipped windshields... ever. |

I currently have a crack about seven inches long on the bottom of the passengers side of my windshield. Sad thing is it was from a rock on the freeway. Its gone as far out to the edges as it can and I don't see it opening up any further so I'm not real worried about it; AZ is not too harsh on these things as long as they aren't obstructing the drivers view. |

Get use to it. I just replaced my 2nd shield. Right before time to turn it in too. Heard that the OEM glass is better but no sooner then I took my bug shield off, CRACK... I put it back on and will let it go with the car. |
