I have a friend with a 2004 KJ and he can't get his steering wheel or key to turn in the ignition. The steering wheel is locked, and we cannot get it to unlock. The wheels are not at full lock but are turned most of the way to the left. Any ideas before he has to get it towed to the stealership?

It's been turned, wiggled, shaked, yanked, sworn at, pushed, pulled, etc...even had the front end off the ground to see if there was tension somewhere in the line not allowing the steering wheel lock to disengage.

If you want to try and fool around - the shroud needs to be taken off, then the ignition assembly can be unbolted from the column and that should drop the tumbler out of the grove in the column that is engauging the lock...

Or at least that is how I remember it working. :?

Ahhh yes i know this trick....kick the tires and pound the ignition with a hammer with the key in it...that worked for my last Jeep when I was parked on a steep hill and had that issue...best of luck to yas...

I had a similar issue with my TJ try to go from park to reverse I know it wont go but just try and see
The linkage will work itself loose some how and cause it to get stuck the same reason that you can turn the car off in D but you can only take the key out in P
