Post subject:  Another question about my 07 - driveability

Just curious if this is another new innovation or something I should have the dealership look at.

If my 07 is in gear on a level surface, the vehicle will sit there if I take my foot off the brake (in gear). Every single car I've driven in the past will move. Even on some hills, I can sit at a red light, take my foot off the brake, and my Jeep will not move (neither forward nor roll backwards) when in Drive.

Did DC add a "hill assist" type thing to the Liberty, or is this part of the ABS/ESP system? Should I be concerned? The vehicle moves no problem if I give it gas. Just find it strange is all and still trying to get used to it.

It's noticeable especially when backing out of (or into) a parking spot. I can be stopped (going from Park to Reverse or Drive to Reverse), take my foot off to roll into the spot (or out of the spot), and the Jeep stays put.

Comments? Ideas?

My buddy had a Dodge Ram like that. I don't think there's anything WRONG with it... I could be wrong.

my 04 does the same thing at a stop light & such almost like a standard when you let out on the clutch just enough so you don't roll back it won't move till you hit the gas,I wouldn't worry about it unless you start hearing noises

I think the extra friction in the 4wd drivelines doesn't allow for the car to creep at idle...mine does it too, it's no biggie. It's not a hill descent "feature" though...point it down hill and it will roll

Mine is the same. I usually dont even hold the brake when sitting at a read light.. I just hope no one hits me.. They willl shoot me across the intersection.

I think it has to do with the type of torque converter they use in the tranny?? :?

It is most likely the WEIGHT of the KJ...not enuff rpms at idle to move the gasser...the CRDs creep forward in the same situation

It has something to do with the valving in the 4 speed auto I am not a trany mech. so I dont know for sure

Our KJ does it and has from day 1 never had a problem the 3 speed auto in the TJ does not do it ,it will roll
How ever I can tell you this the KJ will stop better in 4lo and 1st gear the TJ will keep rollin if you dont get on the breaks hard
That may be what they are trying to avoid

Ahh. Our 03 we used to have never did this....it would roll from a light. That is why I wondered. Thanks for letting me know its normal though. I didnt know if this had anything to do w/my torque converter lockup issue I posted in my other topic or if it was/is unrelated.

Thanks!

I believe it's the newer tranny (42rle) that does this. I thought it was odd too at first but it is normal. And just for the record the 45rfe doesn't behave this way. (This is my opinion based on experience with both transmissions)

Our CRD will creep forward at an idle even with about 4000 LBS in tow!

My 02 will creep forward at idle on a level surface. On a small hill it'll move forward, but on steeper inclines it just sits there...

If I were to put money on it - I'd say that the reason behind it is in the torque converter. That is the hydraulic coupling between the engine crank shaft (spinning) and the transmission input shaft (not spinning at the moment.) Change the properties of that torque converter and I'd bet that your liberty would roll forward.

Not rolling isn't a bad thing - probably just a strange sensation.

Most certainly is. Lol. You tailor your driving habits towards a vehicle which WILL/DOES roll, and then you get into this situation, it's kind of an "eye-opener" lol.

Thanks for the info everyone. I was thinking it may be the Torque Converter, or at least something to do with it.

Mine is the same way...it will roll/creep forward on level surfaces. Like you said 07Latitude...this is helpful when backing out of parking lots because you dont have to press the gas to back up. I've noticed other vehicles (Chevy Duramax 2500HD) wont creep forward...you have to press the gas to move it...and yes it is a strange sensation. It's almost like engine braking.

 I thought the parking brake was stuck when I got the jeep, lol. I have to see if my girlfriend's 06 does what mine does or not. Didn't notice it the 2 times I've driven it, though wasn't really paying attention either.

This "driveability issue" might be associated with the transmission change after 2002... I'd be interested to see if some of the 03 owners have the "no creep" characteristic.

Our old 03 didn't. Thats why this is a new feeling to me. And our old 03 to the best of my knowledge had the 42RLE trans as well.

Strange indeed... There must have been a TC change between the model years somewhere along the lines?

Well - I hope you like the new ride! Enjoy

Thanks man. Were all the 03+ 42RLE transmissions VLP (variable line pressure)? I know my 07 is, dunno about the early ones tho. If not, the line pressure may have SOMETHING to do with it.

my 03 with the 42rle tranny doesn't creep!!! and i like it that way, i kinda like sittin at a redlight without pressing the brake, but i guess i'm just weird like that!

Strange, my 04 will roll backwards on a hill if I let it. Woke me up one day when I almost rolled into someone. My old Cherokee would hold itself on a hill without having to hold the brakes.
