So, the KJ-based Nitro gets a 260hp 4.0 V6 as its optional engine. I'd like 260hp! Its just bored/stroked so it wouldnt be any heavier or physically larger. I bet the engine mounts are the same. And they put that engine in front of the same transmissions (I think) so I bet this would be a pretty straightfoward swap. Heres an info page (they list different HP than the dodge site) http://www.allpar.com/mopar/38-40.html

I dont think that they sell the 4.0 as a crate engine...nor do I have the knowledge, money, or time to pull of that swap. But that would be badass to have something like an H.O. option for our KJs!

::EDIT::

Turns out I was wrong, the 4.0 is a derivative of the 3.5 V6. But still, if its going in a vehicle as similar to the Liberty as the Nitro it would probably still be a straightforward swap.

the '08 Liberty is pretty much based on the Nitro maybe it will have that engine as a Liberty SRT6

Is the Nitro replacing the Durango in '08? I see similarities in the overall profile. (Oddly enough, the current Durango and Liberty have nearly identical tail lights. Go figure.)

Menard's home improvement stores are giving away a Nitro. I can't stand the look of the thing. If I won't, I'd trade it in on a Wrangler, or if I wanted to go the "crossover" route, a Mazda CX7.

If what you want is power, you could build a custom turbo kit or even one of those kits that replaces the muffler with a turbo. That would take care of that. :wink:

No, the Nitro is not replacing the Durango. The Nitro is about 1/2 scale of the Durango.

Their is an SRT Nitro coming, but I didn't hear of a SRT Liberty in the works. Is there confirmation of this?

Besides the engine, you would need to swap over the ECU and all of the associated hardware to make the thing run properly. These days an engine is only as good as the computer controlling it.

It's going to be very difficult and expensive. Also, the new 4.0 is basically a stroked 3.5, not 3.7. You'd be much better off building the 3.7, or waiting to see if it ends up in the '08. I don't see them coming out with an RT or SRT Liberty. I think they did that on the Grand Cherokee for the die hard 59ers whose GC's are starting to get old. Of course, if I was in the market right now, I would try to get my hands on an '05 or '06 CRD and build it.

I've heard that the 3.7s and 4.7s both dont hold up to boost well, thats why the supercharger kits were pulled off the market. Piston rings cant handle it is what I remember reading.

Boost is not easy with a 3.7. For a turbo, you will need forged pistons and rods and new rings. A built set of ported heads would be a good idea also. You'll probably want some 224 cams too. The composite intake manifold could pose a problem also. You're going to need a B&G flash, but I don't know if they do the computer with 4 wiring harnesses that the new KJs have.
