Post subject:  PCV and Fuel Filters

About a week ago, I posted an issue I was having with my gas mileage suddenly dropping. I am wondering: might the PCV have anything to do with this? I have over 61,000 miles on the Renny so it is due for a change nonetheless. Could anyone post a pic of the thing so I know what it looks like and where it is located? This is going to be on my to-do list for this weekend. While I'm on the maintenance topic, does anyone know how many fuel filters the Liberty has, where they are located and how easy it is to change them out (as long as they aren't in the fuel tank)? Thanks for any answers!

Fuel filter is in the tank. You can get to it by pulling back the carpet and taking off the access plate in the cargo area. Ive always wondered why you couldnt just drop the gas tank if its low on fuel.. :?

be sure to keep all the oils changed in the tcase, tranny, and front+rear axles. Spark plugs could cause low MPG, not to sure about the pcv valve though.. :?

PCV valve is right at the top of the oil filler tube and on the left (when looking at the motor from the front of the KJ).

Actually the fuel filter is on top of the gas tank, you only need to lower the tank a few inches to replace(just look for the fuel lines going to the top of the tank and the filter is right there),it's a little pricy due to the fact it has the pressure reglator built in(when I replaced mine it cost me $135 at the dealer for the filter).

You can also take the carpet out (at least on my 2002) of the back, access the door over the tank, remove the hoses, unbolt the filter at the "front" of the tank just above the rear diff, replace. At $135 replacement at the dealer is good, I think the filter alone was between $75 to $95 alone for the "octopus". The filter has like a billion lines man!

Thanks all. I know my fuel filter is ok, I was just wondering if the PCV affected gas mileage, but it is good to know where it is and how to replace it. Now I know, and knowing is half the battle, right? Haha, Go JOE!

The PCV allows a certian amount of crank case gasses to be entered back into the intake path. These gasses then mix with the ignition mixture and then burned off by the controlled explosion that happens in each cylinder. All PCV valves are controlled by a tiny spring. This spring allows for metering of the amount of crank case gasses and as such, if it's old and worn out - your engine is getting too much. This can and does play a roll in MPG figures. So run down to the MOPAR counter and pick one up for around $7.00 and replace the original.

The increase or bennefit won't be drastic by most accounts - but it is worth it and very easy.

Edit: For fun - I took a photo of the PCV valve.

Auto Zone has a pcv valve for $4.99. I had to break the old one off to get it off.
