Post subject:  Cold weather hot start???

During the recent blizzard here in co, i was out driving around in 2 feet of snow in 4L. I stopped, jeep got hot, I drove a bit more to cool off a bit, turned it off. When I went to start, about 10 minutes later, she wouldn't turn over. To save time, i disconnected the battery and waited for the ecu to reset. Started fine after that. Temp was mid 20's. Any similar troubles in the cold??? :?:

Did you have packed snow or mud blocking the airflow over the rad?

it wouldnt start or it would not turn the motor over as in rotate?

OK, big tires, deep sloppy snow, 4L, and slow speed led to overheating. That part was easy to figure out. After turning it off rather hot, it wouldn't start again. It sputtered a bit and just wouldn't start. After clearing the ecu, everything was fine.

BTW, this happened twice in two days. I imagine it would have started fine if I had let it cool off a lot more.

sounds like mine on most days maybe ill have to disconnect the battery for a few hours and see if that remidies it

Umm...it only takes a few minutes for the ecu to reset. A few hours would only be wasting time, unless you were going to bed or something. Did you happen to see what fault codes you got when that happened? I forgot to do that. Those OBDII computers are pretty handy but they do some silly stuff sometimes!

I can't say that I have driven in 30" of snow per say, but a few years back my area got around 18" of snow and I took the Liberty out. I didn't have any problems with cold air temp / hot starts - but my battery light did come on momentarily (sp?) when I was playing around in a empty parking lot. My Liberty has always been a very good "cold weather performer."

Just a guess -> If the engine was still warmer than normal when you turned it off, the ECU might have picked up on some sort of thermal sensor that was reading above normal conditions (on the verge of overheating perhaps) and decided to wait a little longer before firing the motor?

When you shut it off, everything got ALOT hotter because the heat wasnt being taken out by the rad, with the engine shut off, there was no coolant flow or oil flow both of which help cool the engine.

I'd say the computer tripped some sort or temperature alarm that stopped it from starting until it cooled off enough, taking off the battery simlply reset this early.
