Post subject:  Rusty's struts squeeking...

With the colder temperatures of late my struts are squeeking. When I drive over speed bumps or compress the front struts together there's a pretty bad squeek. Just wondering if other have had the same issue. This didn't happen the first winter I had the lift.

Can I put grease on them?

It could be your sway bar bushings not your struts. I have to grease mine every winter, but my bushings are worn out now too. All you need to do is smear grease on the bar on either side of the bushing on the sub frame. If your struts squeak, it could be a leak, that is why I think it would be the sway bar mounts vs the struts.

mine did that a couple of weeks ago during a cold snap.
they squeaked like crazy, but finally stopped with the warmer weather.

I'll check the sway bar bushings and see if that's it.

It really only happens in cold weather when I pull out of the drive way and go through the gutter, and then over the speed bumps in the work parking lot. It makes the noise during compression and extension.

Yeah during the summer it doesn't happen at all.

I had the same problem and it when away when I put some grease on the sway bar bushings.

I am having a similar problem. Mine seems to be a crunching and poping noise. It only does it when there is significant flex.

I've check the swaybar bushings, re-torqued the strut bolts, preplaced the Upper A-Arms with Jeepin Al arms. Still have the noise.

The noise seems to go away when it's raining and the roads are real wet. So something needs to be lubed, but I'm not sure what...

Have you checked the lower ball joints, they squeak and grind when they are going bad, and dry. Also after you install my a-arms make sure the bolts that hold the arms are torqued well, if they are loose the arms will make a racket, which will drive you crazy.

I just had the ball joint recall done about 1 month ago and the squeeking was before that as well. My 2nd recall on those. Now I have the new blues one so I hope those aren't going bad already

Probably just need to lube something.

do you have the dust boots on the Rusty's shocks, they have been known to rub the shock body and make noise. Also grease the sway bar bushings. The sway bar ends will make a banging or loud deep squeak, not a hoigh pitched one, when they go bad.

Next you will need to run the test.....every three days or so spray another componet with wd-40. run the Jeep around eventually you will get to the part that is making the noise. With the bad weather coming in, you may need to wait.

I don't have boot on the front struts. This is more like a mid range squeek. Not to low but not to high.

Guess it's just time to like you say and lube everything.

Would it hurt anything to lube the struts?

Thanks for all the comments

I had a squeek on mine as well over speed bump's and it was my s/b bushing's.I went ahead and installed the daystar bushing's($25) and love them.I have no more sqeek's and the bushing itself is way more heavy duty than oem.

X3 especially when it gets cold outside. Sounds to me like rubbing a damp tire across steel plates on the road. Deep rubbing sound.

Where did you buy the daystar bushing?

Never mind found them on All J's website.

I had the LBJs done about two months ago under the recall. After installing the A-Arms, I did the LBJ check and they seemed to be pretty tight. My noise seemed to start after I installed the Rusty's Strut 1/2 inch strut plates and clevis lift. I took off the sway bar and still have the noise. For my KJ, it is not the sway bar bushings. I can re-create the noise when I brake hard and cause the front end to dip down.

I just put on Rancho struts and I'm getting a squeak from the front dust boot (I think). I put a screwdriver in between the dust boot and the upper strut plate and moved it around and I heard the squeak loud and clear.

I've tried WD-40 and white lithium grease, but I can't seem to hit the spot that it is rubbing. Any ideas on what I could do. If it doesn't go away by the end of the week I will spend the weekend taking it out and trying to figure it out, but it would be alot easier if I didn't have to do that.

When you guys say grease the bushing, is that just taking the bolt out and spraying some grease on the inside? or around the bushing??
