| Post subject: | Front Wheel Bearing |
So i took my jeep into the dealer for the ball joint recall and had them look at the front right for a humming/whining noise and they said bad wheel bearing. They wanted like 350 to replace so i go into the parts counter and ask how much and they said 290 for the part! So i am finding out its an all in one hub thing they didn't make it serviceable... So where can i get one for cheaper but thats good quality? I checked rockauto.com and they have one for 164 but not sure if the quality is ok on somthing like that or not? Second thing is i am asuming you just unbolt the one grease the new one up and slap it on? anything harder than that? Thanks for any and all help, -Nick |

First you have to unbolt the axle and brake caliper. And as for "slapping it in", its a little harder than that. There should be three bolts on the back. I never had one just fall out. If you were going to save it, which there is no reason to, you shouldn't pry or beat on the serface where the wheel studs are. Doing that will seperate the bearing. I always use a chisel and maybe an air hammer on the surface behind where the hub bolts thread in.
If you clean up the surface before reinstalling the bearing asembly it should go in easier than it came out. |

Would it have helped that they took it apart at the shop once already? Also, what about the after market parts, ok to use or should i just get a mopar part? Thanks, -Nick |

It depends who makes the after market part. Ask about warrantee and manufacturer. If made in a reputable country (USA) with a good warrantee I wouldn’t hesitate to go after market especially if the price is right. I think it would make a difference if it has been apart before. When and why has it been apart? There is no reason to have it apart to replace ball joints. |

I actually had them look at it and when i got under it when i brought it home i peeked under there and they clearly had taken the hub off. There was grease around there that was not there before. I have noticed however that it has stopped making the noise since they did that though.... -Nick |

Same as you would ball joints check for up and down movement. |

The Hub is an easy repair, as long as you have the 35mm socket for the axle nut, and you will need a female torx bit socket, I do not remember the size, and my tools are in the Jeep at Rock Lizards shop, so I can't go look for you. It took me all of 40 minutes for both sides including jacking it up. I think I did a write up in the tech section, I will look. Just looked, I guess it didn't get transferred from the old board. As for aftermarket, I got mine from Checker/Shucks/Cragen, with a lifetime warranty National Hub is the manufacturer (associated with Federal Mogul) out of Canada. Mine were about $160 or so w/o ABS, if you have ABS, expect it to be around $50-$70 more. |

The part was manufactured by BCA bearings, another federal mogul company. USAFCOP can you check that torx bit socket that you used? I need to make sure i get all the stuff i need. Thanks! -Nick |
