Post subject:  Roller

Ok ... 2 months into ownership and I've been laying under my KJ looking at all the cool stuff down there (yea my wife says I'm sick to).

So what is that 4"ish diameter x 5"ish wide roller doing ahead of the rear diff.? Is it intended to help during wheeling?

I think you are talking about the driveshaft stablizer thingy- vibration dampener.

"Jeep Balls" - actually a vibration dampener as stated above.

y'all got it all wrong, it's for when u go wheeling, its designed to help you roll off stuff when u get high centered.....

correct, it protects your rear diff...

I bent mine all up last wheeling trip. I wonder if there would even be a noticeable increase in vibration if I just took them off.

Post subject:  Not protection

Just so everyone is clear they are not there for protection, they "might" protect it but in my experince they just bend up and ding your diff anyway. They are however vibration Dapining device that I have been told by many that I respect dont seem to do much once off and some just remove them.

I however reordered one when I finaly could not rebend it back and they have seemed to redesign them a bit after 03 so they dont bend as much.

BTW if you have an 03 or below and here a constent knocking noice on hard accelloration, and also over bumps you just might have a bent one.

I learned this after I bought my Second Liberty it had this noise off the lot and it got bent didn't know it. Well they replaced rear shocks, Springs, Swaybar, and Muffler before they finaly narrowed it down to that being bent.

Funny thing was they only reason they figured it out was because they had another liberty up on the jack next to mine and they tech was sitting under mine with his hands in the air goign I cannot figure it out when he started compairing them and noticed that mine was slightly bent.

later,
Dan

FYI

The dampener on the bottom of the third member of the KJ is for vibration and harmonic dampening only. It is there to counteract the driveshaft's natural tendancy to produce a certain harmonic at certain rpm. The motion that the u-joint produces causes a very minor and specific vibration and harmonic that, left un-accounted for, will cause a certain resonance to sound throughout the cab of the vehicle. It can also be accompanied by a noticable vibration that is felt inside the cab as well.

Vehicles with short drive shafts (typically that are on exaggerated angles) are more prone to this type of harmonic. Wranglers don't have them because they are naturally a little noisier and it is not really noticable in them.

Usually, bending them will only cause a problem if they are bent in such a way as the steel counter-weight is no longer completely isolated by rubber and is touching directly to the housing or bracket.

Hope that helps,
-Adam

P.S. A lot of times when this piece is damaged, the driveshaft is bend slightly as well and is actually the main cause of the additional vibration/noise in the cab.

Yeah guys, the "protection" bit is just a joke...that side of the diff needs no protection as it is probably one of the strongest parts on your jeep. Now the other side is a different story.
