Post subject:  Bug shield question

Okay, so i just got a bug shield for my 05 renegade for christmas and I installed it. Now i get a lot of wind noise along to top of the wind shield and at my side view mirrors. I guess it just needs adjusted somehow. When i installed it, it used the screws along underside of the hood and the four rubber pieces along the top of the hood that just stick to the hood. The two outsides i have pushing up on the shield just a little bit and the two inside ones don't touch it at all, where should these things go? Do I have the outsides in too far and they shouldn't touch the shield also?

Thanks

The rubber pieces are to keep the shield away from your paint as it flexes in the wind. The idea of a bug shield is to redirect air flow so the bugs don't hit your wind shield. So I would guess you have to live with the noise.

Does anyone else have a bug sheild installed on their liberty? Does it make any noise. I get a lot of noise, like having a window down. My brother has one on his wrangler and my friend has one on their grand cherokee and neither one makes any wind noise.

I have one and have not noticed any additional noise. I also have the ones on the windows.

Yup.....They change the aerodynamics and make noise. Sometimes its wind noise sometimes is sounds like the wipers banging
against the windshied. Depends on wind direction and speed.
Turn up the radio.

Hmmm, a friend of mine had a libby with one and he never said anything about it. The purpose of the deflector is to push the wind up and over the windshield.. Sounds like its not turned up enough so that the air clears the windshield. :?

His was an 02 though, so the hood wasnt flat. :?

I've got one on my '03 Renny and haven't noticed any additional wind noise after I installed it. The only real difference was that the wiper spray went awry rather than directly on the windshield, but it still works fine, so I guess that means it's doing its job. I also have the rain deflectors and they work very well with no additional noise except when the windows are open slightly, but being a smoker i have to deal with it becasue they are mandatory, haha!

I noticed the same thing on my 06. I had to put the covers on my roof lights and that helped with some of the noise but it was still there. While on the highway look at your hood is being pushed down from the wind then try to use your windshield washer. Then go home and take it off. They look great on there but they are not worth the draw backs. Needless to say I have a bugsheild for free if anybody wants it. On the highway the noise was almost unbearable. when I tried to use the washers the fluid went forward. The hood was being flexed so badly i was afraid it would break down the adhesive holding the hood together

okay, thanks for the imput. I guess it looks like i can try to push it forward a little to send the wind over the windshield otherwise just bear it, it only makes a lot of noise when i go over 60 mph, i haven't noticed any difference with the washer fluid going awry but then again i usually only use it when im stopped.

Benegade -

I have a bug shield on my '05 and I get no extra noise, no hood deflection, and no forward-squirting washer fluid. I do see the bug shield flex down at speed but I expect that. I can't imagine why your install would exhibit so many problems, weird.

Chris -

Only thing I noticed with my shield was that almost 100% of the road rocks stopped hitting my windshield. I can only guess that the bug shield is actually doing its job and deflecting the air flow up and over the roof. Any rocks and whatnot that do hit my window are right near the top.

As for your question about the headlight area of the bug shield, mine is such that I can see between the shield and the hood above the head light bulge. Still seems to work even though air has to be going under the shield at both ends. All four of my rubber stoppers are tight against the shield (stuck them to the hood rather than letting them rub on the paint in the wind) since the shield practically touched to hood when I was done installing before putting the stoppers on.

Good luck.

TheBenagade seems to have a nearly new one laying around. Give him a Private Message and see about shipping. Ohio to Illinois can't be too much.

The same fit applies to '02 thru '07 (according to a quick search) but he has a Renegade which has a different hood. Not sure if the '02s had that option or if you bought one.

Good luck cleaning the one you got...

Post subject:  I Get Some Noise!

Yep, I get some noise and I know what it is...

When it is colder than say 65 degrees F the vertical rubber strips on the front windshield flap a bit. It sounds like a noise like the wiper blades flapping. But, it is the vertical rubber strips in contact with the windshield. I have noticed that the noise can be reduced if the outter edge (that stand out about an inch from the windshield) are pressed/beat in a little more (use a long flat piece of wood to keep the shape uniform). There is metal within this piece that forms the seal and is part of the vertical rubber edge in contact with the windshied that flaps a bit in the wind.

I really thought it is stupid that this happens as it is a "design-flaw" of the Jeep and Mopar parts.
