Post subject:  Seat belts

Hey guys I have to get this off my chest. I'm giving a pre sorry for kicking a dead horse but. I lost a very good friend today in a rollover accident. He was partially ejected and the Bronco landed on him. He died at the scene. His wife has a crushed vertabrea, a few broken ribs, and a broken thumb. Neiher one was wearing thier seatbelts. He left behind 3 kids, brothers, mothers, dads, friends, and a wife. As I struggle to wrap my head around what a great friend I have lost, I also am angered in a selfish way that he didn't wear his seatbelt. I post this rant in hopes that everyone makes a point to wear his/her seatbelt. His wife watched him take his last breath and maybe just maybe if he would have worn his she would have watched him take his next breath. I wouldn't wish the emotions his family is going through on my worst enemy so please wear your seatbelt. If nothing else think of the friends and family you could leave behind the next time you are behind the wheel. Once again sorry for the rant.

If there's anything LOST can do as a group for them, let us know.

Man...

I am so sorry for your loss. Such a horrible thing that could have so easily been prevented. My heart goes out to you and I second the notion for everyone to buckle up. I have to as mine wont stop the awful seatbelt chime if i don't. Annoying as hell but I am always wearing my seatbelt because of it. Thanks for thinking of us and I will be thinking of you and praying for the family.

They need all the help they can get right now. He was the only breadwinner of the family and they were a one car family. When I was talking to his wife last night she started going through all the stuff that she was going to need. I think that for the funeral instead of giving flowers some friends and I are just going to give them some cash seeing that a flower wilts and dies cash will put a meal on thier plates. Thank you for your support and prayers. But remember this isn't about my lose of a friend it's about not loosing a friend/family member. Thanks again

I will spare you my "as long as you don't legislate my protection from my self" speech and simply offer my condolences and agree that seat belts are a good idea.

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss. It does reiterate the fact that wearing a seatbelt greatly increases the chance of you surviving a crash.

Here are some facts about vehicle crashes

You are 25 times more likely to be killed in a ejection from a car

What happens in a car fire if you are knocked out from not wearing your belt?

Most accidents occur within 25 miles from home

80% of all serious injuries occur at 40MPH or slower

Seat belts are 57% effective at preventing traumatic and fatal brain injury. Brain and chest injury are the most frequent cause of death

In a crash the unrestrained occupents keep moving during the time the car takes to stop. They are still moving forward at the original vehicle speed until they impact the steering wheel, dash, or the windsheild

In fatal crashes 73% of all passengers who were ejected from a vehicle were killed.

its so crazy that how you described the scene was almost exactly how my friend died 2 years ago, just replace bronco with tahoe and wife with girlfriend!!! Some people i know died just the other day when they flipped their scion, the two that were not wearing the seatbelts died at the scene and the two that did came out with scratches. Also my dads friend has been a State Patrol officer for 20years and he told me one time that out of all the accidents he has covered he has never unbuckled a dead person, alot of seriously injured people but never a dead one. I wear my seat belt everytime i get in a car.

Gosh, I cannot imagine what the family and you are going through. Such a sad thing to see. My prayers are with the family and you....

We recently got a new grand cherokee and it makes the dinging sound for both the driver and passenger seat belts if they are not fastened. My mother never wears hers but now she must b/c I wont show her how to turn the dings off. 8)

Very sorry to hear of your loss man and sad that it could have been easily avoided. I know I used to be one of them people that would never wear my seatbelt and when I bought my liberty I had to because of the annoying ding that I am sure saved me once allready when I had to avoid hitting a car and took the ditch side and hit a drive way I was airborne but keeped the jeep under control when I landed but had I not had my seatbelt on and got tossed all over I am sure i would have lost it. Was a scary moment but I was never happier that I had that annoying seatbelt ding. Thank you for sharing your story and my prayers go out to you and your friends family.

It's difficult to believe the statistics until you live through the experience. Several years ago I walked away from an accident because of seatbelts and airbags. Even with both passive restraints, I still split my lip on the steering wheel and had a minor cut on my hand from hitting something plastic on the dash. But I still walked away, once I crawled out through the window because the doors were jambed. That was a simple deer hit in a Daytona which shows it doesn't take much of a collision to gain their benefit.

Sorry to hear. I had an accident back in 1985 when I slammed my 78 Monte Carlo into a tree. I was lucky to have my seatbelt on and it saved my life. I suffered a bite on my tongue but was dazed and tried to throw the car into Park. Flames started shooting up from the engine compartment. I tried to get out of the drivers door. No go. I had to get out of the passengers door. In a few minutes, the flames were in the front compartment. By the time the first vehicle (safety) arrived, the flames were in the back seat. If I had not been wearing my seatbelt, I would have been burnt toast.

I am inclined to take donations but the more I think about it the logistics to get all that arranged and such I don't think I could do it. And don't pray for me. Pray for the children that he left that never have that chance to really get to know thier dad after they grow up. His 2yr old boy will never know how happy his dad was when he came into this world. That's what really bothers me. I can deal with loosing a friend but when I saw his kids last night... An 8yr old that understands what she lost, a 6yr old that knows what happened but still expects her dad to walk in the door, and the little 2yr boy that will never understand why he didn't get to know his dad. Thanks for putting up with these rants but on some level it gives me piece of mind that maybe theres a family that wont have to go through what they are going through after reading this. RIP Daryl
