Borrowed from this thread... http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... php?t=1668 What are you guys using for acetone and where are you getting it? ... I think its supposed to be 100% pure to really see effects. Apparently even the bottles that say 100% arn't always pure. I got one from CVS the other day that said 100% but also had denatonium benzoate in it? Check this out... http://www.lubedev.com/smartgas/additive.htm Different subjects here but same guy... http://www.lubedev.com/articles/ |

Not using this, although I have tried it and seem to have had good results, but didnt try it enough to say for sure. Acetone can be bought at beauty supply stores that sell nail supplies. (wifes a nail tech, among other things) They should have the pure stuff at a decent price. They also have it at home depot, but I havnt checked to see if it is 100% or not. |

I've bought mine at WalMart in a 1 gallon can. It's been a while but I think it was about $16. |

The nail supply store had it for half that. You know I have read so many mixed reviews about this idea it is crazy. I really think it depends on the vehicle....either that or a whole bunch of people are imagining things. |

Or a whole bunch of people dont know how to take accurate readings on mpg and they are all seeing an increase. Seems more likely to me. In my experience its always the person that screws something up, no matter how simple. haha |

Check the first post in this thread at the top of the page. It links to another Lost thread that I was looking at which prompted me to ask this question.... |

The only thing about getting a accurate reading, it cant be done. It doesnt matter if you think you drive the same way, or drive on the same roads, it doesnt matter. You would need to have the jeep in a sealed room at the same temp and humidity, running on a dyno that put the same load on the jeep for each tank of fuel. |

You want to stay away from the beauty salon acetone as it would have other chemicals and additives in it to make fingernails stronger and healthier. The can from Home Depot or a similar stor would be better and maybe even cheaper. There have been some disussion on the allpar.com forums and this one: http://www.mpgresearch.info/viewforum.php?f=4&sid=d79f9f95bc671e5e7d25850233fdcfd9 |

i use it all the time. you can feel a significant difference in how smooth your engine runs before you even get home. i also get at least 1mpg better. i get the pure stuff in metal screw lid quart containers from ACE hardware. and i measured 2.5 oz on the side of a nail polish bottle and keep it in the jeep ready to go. great for drip free pours. when i refill, i always put 10 gallons in. the added bonus is i always know that im using 2.5 oz per 10 gal. |

I saw this recently on Myth Busters. They tried acetone while driving at a constant speed of 35 and then 55 on a dyno, and saw a decrease in mpg. |

From my experience, using 6 oz. per tank was about a 4 mpg increase on highway trips. However, on a daily basis to and from work and local driving I couldn't tell any increase. I think it just evaporates sitting around in your tank for a week at a time. |

I've heard that in proper doses it could increase mileage by a small percent, an overdose could actually decrease mileage, but as for me I would never use it because I also know that it can rob lubricating properties in the fuel, and posibly attack plastic type components such as upper plenums(where applicable) pcv systems, ect. Myself, the percentage of gain aint worth the risk of loss. |

I tried it for quite some time, carefully measuring, trying to drive the same, I even purchased and installed a scangauge. You're better off saving your money for something else. You get as good mileage just watching the way you accelerate, watching the traffic lights way ahead, maybe even changing your route, and coasting as much as possible. Note, I have a manual transmission so coasting is an easy option. |
