Post subject:  Threw a code this morning...NOW PISSED

Just had a P0430 code come up on me this morning when I was halfway to school. After classes got out I stopped by the local AutoZone for the free scan since the check engine light was on and that was the code that was read. Seems to be something up with the Catalytic Converter I suppose??/ ANyone want to chime in with any info they might have on this code or experience with it. I reckon it could also potentially be an O2 sensor perhaps??? Not totally sure...

Thanks, Scott

For the record it is a 2006 with 10,650 miles.

A code P0430 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

The catalytic converter is no longer functioning properly
An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
There is an exhaust leak

The simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.

Then inspect for exhaust leaks.

Next step is to measure the voltage at the oxygen sensor on Bank 2 (the passenger side rear sensor, or the sensor after the converter). The voltage should be low and steady (~200mV, depends on the vehicle). If the voltage varies (e.g. 100mV to 600mV) then it's time to replace the catalytic converter. In fact, it would be a good idea to test each oxygen O2 sensor while you're at it.

One thing to note is that many vehicle manufacturers offer a longer warranty on emissions-related parts. So if you have a newer car but it's out of it's bumper-to-bumper warranty, there still may be warranty on this type of problem. Many manufacturers give a five year, unlimited mileage warranty on these items. It's worth checking into.

Thanks for the confirmation on that Jeepster...we'll see what the dealer has to say tomorrow morning at 730 when they check it out...

Jeepjeepster is pretty much dead on it. A PO430 code is a Cat. diffecency code. If it where an O2 sensor setting the code,
it would be bank 2 sensor 2,or downstream of cat. My bet is on the Cat. Conv. Fed. Gov. gives you 5 year or 50,000 miles.

Well after the dealer checked it out it seemed as if there was a computer issue as once they checked everything related to the code it was fine...then the code threw an unknown wrong statement at them and they just reflashed the computer and all is well. So we'll see what hte future holds for codes...hopefully i won't end up with a dud of a computer in the long run...

One more tip, if your Liberty runs too rich for some reason it will destroy your catalytic converter prematurely.

Oh, and they disintegrate sending honeycombed chunks into your exhaust pipes. My friends fell apart on his GTI, his fault for screwing with the fuel injection, but it would intermittently stall and haul stupid over the next few weeks. We pulled off his muffler to see if something was clogging it and it was full of the catalyst, some were 1 1/2" round balls that exactly fit inside the tail pipes.

Easy now...take a few deep breaths and talk calmly to your dealership service people. This is only a machine designed, built and serviced by human hands and thus will be pron to failure. It could be much worse, you could have bought a CRD with chronic dealer visits.

When you talk to them calmly, remind them this failed and left you stranded almost immediately after their service tech declared it fixed. That usually alerts them to a problem with the way it was serviced the first time and/or that their performance reviews aren't going to be so good this time. You may get some better care or a more experienced tech this time.

Oh and I believed yall too that there was something wrong...just that the dealer didn't seem fit to agree with that code....for whatever reason...they had reflashed the computer too and the code never appeared again that day till the isue of no power last night...But now the dealer I bought it at seems to have their service dept open today so it is getting towed to them in about 30 mins...we'll see what develops..."Jeep Liberty stranded on road, What happened? Details at 11"

That's some bad Jeep juju there. What dealer did you take it to first? My guess is Wolfchase. I have another friend that ahs a 2wd model and they told him several months for the ball joint recall. Anyway, keep us posted what happens.

Yea John it was taken to Wolfchase on Friday morning...i have it sitting at Gossett now where I bought it and I'm calling them at noon to find out the status of it. Their service dept is open today, a surprise to me. So we'll see what develops. Wolfchase did however order me a new multifunction switch since my foglamps kept coming on with my parking lights...so maybe they diagnosed that problem right....
