Post subject:  extended warranties

Are these really beneficial? I have been getting a couple in the mail and remember the dealer saying I could add one on if I chose to. I haven't really looked to close for pricing or anything but wonder if it might be worth getting. Thanks.

Thats a hard call. Most of the time you wont even use them. But its really nice to have that comfort that if something does happen, you will have it.

The libby doesnt seem to have alot of long run problems yet. Alot of people are starting to get more and more miles on them and there doesnt seem to be alot going wrong. The libby seems to be fairly reliable over all.

We got a 06 Grand not long ago and went ahead and got the 7yr/70k bumper to bumper. The grands seem to have some problems so we thought it was the best idea. It also has MDS, im not to sure how that will do in the long run.. :?

MDS sounds like a disease. Is it catching?

That's what I was thinking. My Libby can't hang out with your GC until it gets it's shots!!

MDS stands for Multi Displacement system. It shuts off 4 cylinders when they are not needed.

Is that thing a Hemi? My dodge ram has the same thing. Still sounds like some kind of sickness.

If you get an aftermarket service contract (not a warranty) be very choosy with them. Mopar's SC is the best to have if you have a Mopar product. GM SC is the best if you have a GM product etc. Any Aftermarket SC is junk for the most part. They are cheaper than a Mopar SC but there are so many hoops and qualifiers when it comes time to repair. I've worked as a Service Advisor at a Jeep dealership and have delt with a ton of Aftermarket SC's and usually had nothing but problems. For example I had a customer that bought a used TJ and purchaced the ASC from the dealer. The jeep had a 4" lift when he bought it. Shortly after his transmission starts whining. The SC company made the customer state that he is resposible for the cost of teardown if the failed part isn't covered by the SC company. So the guy agrees thinking he has this "warranty" Long story short they sent out an adjustor to verify the claim. He walks in the shop door looks at his paperwork comes to me and asks which jeep it was. I pointed it out he turned his head to look, looks back to me and asks to use the phone. He denied the claim because of the lift. The selling dealer sent faxes stating the lift was on at time of purchase. 3 weeks of this guys TJ sitting on a lift taking money out of the techs, advisors, and customers pockets they still denied his claim and he was stuck with over 2 weeks of rental car because they wouldn't wouldn't authorize the repair they wouldn't pay for the rental. And he still had to pay for the teardown/ repair that he authorized. Sorry for the long post but I have a ton of these storys. Mopars are more costly but if you have a big repair they pay for themselves just by convienence alone. I know that there are others on here that will vouch for that also. OH and don't think that because your buying it at a Mopar dealership you are getting a Mopar contract. Alot of dealerships will sell ASC's because they make more money off of them. Don't let them push one on you. PM me if you want more ASC horror storys.

I had one (it just expired) but I never used it. which is fine because that just means my Liberty has been reliable for the last 4 years. But I don't regret buying it - becuase if I needed to use the warranty and didn't have it... well it was just nice to know it was there.

I have to second Parakeet. Except they are all crap, not just the aftermarket. If you plan to do anything from installing a lift or stereo or even a K&N, they can void all coverage, it is in the fine print. I had the MOPAR SC on my 02 when I bought it new (before the 7/70, and bought the mopar 7/70 as extra) then took the 15 day trial period to read the fine print. Any lift will void the contract. If I remember right, the wording said something like "any modification to the vehicle that alters the factory apearance or function will void any and all coverages in this contract"

So if you plan to never modify your Jeep, then maybe. It is all based on how/what you plan on using your jeep for. Read the fine print very carefully. And no matter what they say, you have 12-15 days to review the contract to decide if it is truely right for you.

I think a lot depends on your dealer We have our Sebring (2006), a PT Cruiser (2001), and a Jeep Liberty (2006) and we have extended warranties on all of them. All are modified to some extent and the PT Cruiser is extensively modified - both appearance and performance mods. The dealership has always honored any and all warranties with never a peep and with never one of those $85 "diagnostic" charges. In fact, everyone knows our cars and are always interested in our newest additions. I guess you have to have to know your dealership before you make a decision.
