Post subject:  Steering tie rod help

Need someone to go look at their rig for me.

Passenger side tie rod. Not the end but the side that has the boot and goes to the steering gear. Question is: does that rod feel/look like it's sraight or does it have a slight bend?

Thanks, in advance.

The smaller rod it self is straight as is the inner rod of the rack. The smaller rod screws into the rack rod. The drivers side has the gear notches in the rack rod for the pinion to move the rack in and out turning the wheels. If any of that is bent, you will need to replace it. The boot sag does give the outter rods a bent look however.

Hey Al. Maybe we're in a nomenclature issue here. By smaller rod is it also known and the tie rod end? That inner rod appears to be bent (yes I know how I did it) . Looks like to fix it I need to replace the entire gear assembly. It that what you're seeing as well.

If so, just got a dealer quote of $633. Yow!

Wasn't too sure which you were speaking of. The tie rod or little rod I guess is not bent, the actual rack or larger inner rod is the bent one. Is the rack leaking yet? I tell you the $633 for the install of a new rack is well worth it. See my post in general under "I need to vent".

Oh, $633 is for the rack itself, not the install. Also looking at the wrecking yards. I'm trying to decide whether I have the tools to do the job myself.

Rack's not leaking.

$633 just for the rack....wow! Go on e-bay there is a place in Canada that has them rebuilt for around $200. Figure $100/hr for labor, and around 8 hours to install, you are looking at $1000 to $1500 just to replace the thing. Well now I am kinda glad I did it my self.
