Post subject:  loud noise when making a hard turn

I have tried to use the search first, but it stinks. I have a loud whirring noise down by the drivers side wheel when making hard turns. Anyone know what it might be? Could it be the power steering pump? Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer.

If the steering is at full lock the power steering system will make a "whirring" noise. This is because the power steering pump is attempting to make enough pressure to push the steering system past the full lock position, which it cannot do... so it's like someone trying to push a garbage truck with the parking brake on... we all know it's not possible, but the person will more than likely grunt while trying to do it. It's nothing serious, but I've always heard that it's hard on the pump, so try not to do it if you can.

Hope that helps.

Have you went out and gave your front tires a good shake to see if anything feels loose? Could have a wheel bearing going or a simple readjust. The rotor would than move and hit your brake caliper when loaded on the side in a turn.

Check your power steering fluid. It could be low. Happened to me.

Thanks for helping me find the problem. It was the power steering fluid, well I should say lack of power steering fluid. Very strange how it was just about empty and never a drop on the garage floor.
