I went to add some oil and when I opened the oil fill, I found this bright yellowish orange foam. :o :o :o Now this was just under the cap where you fill the oil. What can this be from? Should I be alarmed?

Oil level and anti-freeze level was OK. Everything seems to be running fine. I was just changing the oil filter and needed to replace the lost oil from the filter change. I was using AMSOIL 5w30.

Sounds like it could be condensation.

In most engines, most of the time it's just water vapor condensation. Clean the cap and keep an eye on both the oil and the coolant frequently. If you see any milkiness or water droplets in the oil then you have a problem. You may also want to check your crancase breather/PCV valve for leaks or a blockage as the water vapor could be coming from blow-by.

Yes its condensation, esp. bad if you make a lot of short trips not allowing the engine to fully warm up.

Thanks for the quick replies. The dipstick oil seemed ok. Didn't notice any milkyness on it. It was all right under the fill cap for the oil, bright yellow/orangish milky foam.

I cleaned it out real good and checked all fluid levels.

If you get a chance pull a valve cover...you might be surprised at the thick "gunk" you will find. If you make a lot of short trips, it really builds up on the top end. I had a wrist pin go bad because of this on my 2002.

Remember that our stock radiator fluid is pinkish red not the old day glow yellow. If you see the coolant tank level drop and a redish film then get worried.

Well, I'll add to the mix since I grew up in Ohio. So another Ohio person.

What is considered short trips? I drive five miles to work everyday (11 minutes). Luckily, Jeep changes my oil every ~3k (free lifetime - 4 changes max per year though).

By the way, more snow! 3-8" by tonight.

Go Ohio U Bobcats Go Ohio State Buckeyes.

Why doesn't Ohio sink into the Ohio River?

I drive about 70 miles round trip a day to work. Occasionally I will car pool and that cuts my drive to 20 miles round trip. Most of my drives are long except when I go out for lunch, then it is usually a short couple mile drive.

Short would be anything that doesn't allow the oil to get up to temperature (you really want it hot enough to boil off condensation) - 5 miles might do it if the outside is 90+ degrees - if you're at 20F...... changing the oil at 3K is a good idea.

I just picked up 6 quarts of Mobil's finest from costco.... it came to $27.87 (Cheaper than the 5-quart jug from Wally world)
I have the filter sitting in my garage waiting to go, but I'm sick and travelling tomorrow... looks like my oil change will be waiting until wednesday.

You should see the difference in CCV gases condensing and draining out of the Provent when the weather turns cold. Hot weather get all oil & no noticable water, winter probably 1/3 waterery sludge.

I just drove back from Pittsburgh and checked again. Below are pictures of the gunk that is showing up under my oil cap. Should I be real concerned about this? :( :( :(

I don't seem to be loosing any antifreeze. Engine runs fine.

My next step is going to be to do a full oil change and then recheck. Any other suggestions?
