before i go and start spending on my liberty i'd like to know how long to expect it to last. i'm sure that with the proper care it would last 'forever' (i had a '79 Mercedes that final dies at ~120,000miles) but whats a realistic lifespan on a jeep?

i've a 2003 liberty w/close to 50,000 miles. at the present time i drive anywhere between 200 - 275 miles a week.

Cherokees are known to last over 200k easy. We have a 94 Grand with 160k and no major problems.

that's certainly encouraging. so theres no immediate (say w/in 50,000miles) danger of something major crapping out?

Anything can go out on any vehicle at anytime. It just depends on what you want. Do you want a vehicle with high miles and some higher maintainence costs no monthly payments or do you want a new vehicle and a steady monthlypayment. Me... I plan on keeping my KJ until it literally falls apart. In two years, the KJ will be MY vehicle and we'll buy the 'family' car then.

The longevity of your vehicle also depends on how you drive it, Offroading puts more strain on the car, especially suspension parts. But I like to think that my KJ will last atleast another 3+ years allowing me to get out of college. Its an 03 with 37000 miles, and i'm putting a good 300 to 400 miles on it a week going to and from school. Plus it sees the mud about every other weekend.

My '02 Renegade's got a little over 110K miles on it with no major problems. My husband's '96 Grand Cherokee has almost 200K on it. As long as you keep up on the maintenance - these vehicles are built to last (imho).

This is something I've also thought about. My liberty had around 78K on it when I purchased it and being that it's my first vehicle, I really wondered how long it would last. I've known people that owned Jeeps for years and beat the living crap out of them. This is my family's first Daimler-Chrysler product...well its mine...but I brought it into a family who's always owned Fords. I was looking forward to the quality of the Jeep to match that of Fords. So far I've been really really impressed. Of course I've had a few problems...but that is given for a 5 year old used vehicle. I've taken the best care of my KJ and will continue to do so. I think that if you do the best at keeping up on maintenance and taking the best care of your Jeep...it will only pay off in the end...and will last long for you. I'm hoping for atleast another good 3-4 years for my KJ.

My daughter had a Cherokee that had 160K on it when she bought it with about 3K on a new motor. Only thing we did to it in the next 50K plus was brakes and a muffler. I think the Liberty is built better.

My 96 Cherokee has over 263,000 on it , now needs a transfer case but otherwise no problems. It has never even had the head off the engine and other than one water pump thats about it except for regular maintenance. Of course I have had Chevy pickups with over 275,000, a Ford Explorer with 210,000 when I sold it etc. You can have good and bad ones in any of them but it also how you keep up on the maintenance. I always do my own so know them very well. I plan on keeping the Liberty for at least 200,000 if it will have me!

I've got 122K on my 02 Limited. Some light off-roading but about 80 percent of the miles are highway driving. Here's what's gone wrong so far:

0-100K: Nothing.
100K-110K: Broken valve spring, A/C compressor failure, alternator failure (not all at once, but within a few months).
110K+: Nothing.

I don't recall exactly, but I think it cost about $1800 for the valve spring repair. (All the other valve assemblies were replaced at the same time as a precaution). It was August when the A/C went out and I didn't even pay attention to what it cost: fix it or I die. The alternator (and of course a new battery) cost the usual amount and was almost to be expected at that mileage.

I also replaced the multifunction switch a few months ago. I'd been having the flickering dash lights for a long time but it didn't bother me until the headlights started cutting out around 100K miles.

The Benz died after 120k? Wow! That is probably rare. Are you sure it hadn't turned the odometer over once or did you buy it new?

You can always replace the heart of the beast and bring it back to life.

My current Cherokee has 207,000 on it. The one before that had 125k on it when it was totaled and the one before that had 190k when I sold it. My dad had an '89 Cherokee with 279k in it when it was totaled. I have 20k on my '06 Liberty and as long as the trans holds up I will have it for a long time.
