So, my power steering has been making this wierd loud "humming" sound when it's cold outside. I know it's the steering because the sound gets alot louder when I move the wheel to the side. It makes the sound when the jeep is moving or stationary. The sound then goes away when the engine or fluid heats up or whatever, and the sound does not exist when it's warmer outside.

Then, I took off the power steering fluid cap yesterday to see if the fluid was low and it FOAMED all over the place!

Whats going on?

Sounds like the pump is going out or the fluid is low. Unless someone put the wrong kind of fluid in there? I suppose it couldnt hurt to drain the fluid and replace it with new, but it sounds like you are heading for a new PS pump.

Why would the sound go away when the engine warmed up?

Usually makes noise when the fluid is low. When it warms up it may be expanding just enough to have the sound go away.

It will make noise when the fluid is low, and air gets into the system. I will let you know how long it takes the air to get out of the system.
