Post subject:  Flipper Glass lift struts...

Are these a dealer only item? Anyone have to replace them yet?

Thanks!

What happened to yours? A friend of mine tried to close the glass once by pushing down on one corner, and the arm bent about 30 degrees. I just straightened it again and it still works fine. That was about 3 years ago.

Mine are weird... when it's cold outside they don't want to open very easily but they close VERY easily... I almost feel bad about slamming the glass shut.

Due to the (realitive) cold temperature in Michigan the rear window doesn't open anymore. In years past, regardless of the temperature, the window would pop up and I could open the rear door.

Last night I hit the botton, heard the latch disengage but saw no movement on the window. I went over and had to lift the window on my own. It stayed up but something doesn't seem right at the moment. I'm thinking that I will just go ahead and replace the struts just to avoid any hassles but I've been having a terrible time finding them.

That sounds like the latch isn't disengaging all the way to release the glass. Maybe there's something (dirt, debris) caught in the latch mechanism? Or maybe the piston arms just need a little lube.

I'll try cleaning the latch out and relubricating both of the arms and latch parts tonight. I hadn't thought of that

And just as an FYI for the thread:
Dealer carries the struts - $45.50 each + taxes. So for 2 of them, it'll be around $96.xx to replace
Ebay has them listed for $80.00, but I didn't check for shipping
I couldn't find them at any of the parts stores... if anyone does, please just post up a link or cost information

Air contracts when it gets cold. Thats why they do not work when its cold. My rear window will not pop open if im parked nose downhill and its cold out. Thats becuase there is more weight on the shocks when the jeep is downhill.

I can not believe they want that much for those! When we replaced the shocks on the gate of our Grand Cherokee, we got them from Quadratech. I would say that they do not have them for the glass of the libby though. :?

Did you try napa like tommudd said? :)

Holy crap that's expensive. I mean, for what they are... That's interesting about your problems in the cold. My 03's glass pops up and stays up even in -40 C. It's sometimes a bit stiff to close it, so I just press down slowly when it's cold. Maybe it has something to do with cold + high humidity or whatever.

Is the glass freezing to the body? We keep our Ram outside and when it gets really cold the doors and tailgate freeze shut. We actually had to pry the tailgate away from the bed cover once.

No, the seal isn't sticky for sure... I just ran out and tried it again. The latch now pushes the glass off the pad about 1" into what I'd call a partially open position. But from here the struts will not push the glass up wards. It's almost like they are sticking so I'm going to grease them up when I get home and try again

I do understand the concept of expansion and contraction relating to temperatures - but right now it's ~20*F which isn't that cold and the window still won't move up. It's not a huge deal by any means - I'm just not happy when something isn't working right on my vehicle.

The cold weather is when the gas lifts are least likely to work. If you replace them they should be replaced in pairs because a weak lift will tend to overload the new one. There are brands that offer lifetime warrantys. I bought some for 86 and 89 DC minivans at O'reilly and replaced several times under warranty.

This is not exactly related to the strut on the wondow, but I have a 2002 Lib and I'm seeing quite a bit of rust at the top of the rear window area when the window is up. Does anyone else have this problem?
